My favorite amendment is the First Amendment, which offers freedom of expression and freedom of religion free from interference by any government level. The amendment which was adopted from the Bill of Rights 1791, puts into the provision that, no any other law should be established may interfere with the exercise of religion, inhibit the freedom of speech, interfere with the press freedom, formulate a national doctrine as well as infringe the citizen’s rights to seek for a government redress or put across their grievances. The first amendment applies only to the freedom, though, in the court, the law is interpreted to be used across the whole federal government. Also, the 14th amendment of the Due Process Clause is seen to be protecting the provisions of the 1st amendment, which prohibits any interference by the state governments.
The freedom of religion is catered for by both the establishment clause and the free exercise clause. The Establishment Clause puts across that; the government cannot form a religious body or show any affiliation to any religious group. This means that religion and state are two independent bodies. The Free Exercise Clause puts across that the government, at any point, should not interfere with an individual’s belief. The 1st amendment defines freedom of speech as an expression of words or action in the protection of freedom of speech. The amendment hence put a requirement that any person has the freedom to express themselves without being interfered with by the government. This freedom thus allows an individual to express themselves and does not accord to members of press any special privileges. The right to assemble in the 1st amendment is in exclusion of the freedom of association. This means that, though the meeting is legal, association in any activity is prohibited. The right of redress goes hand in hand with the power to assemble where people are allowed to work together and air their grievances to the government.
