Nevermind
Nevermind is among the most loved and influential rock and roll albums of the 1990s. It is a funny, disturbing, unpredictable, dark and emotive album that is described in several bombastic framings. The album was recorded in sound city studios found in Van Nuys. It is the second album by the famous American rock and the band Nirvana Kurt Donald Cobain, which was produced by Butch Vig and released in 1991. Despite many labels countering the band, Nirvana chose to sign with Geffen Records based on their repeated recommendation by Sonic Youth Management Company. It’s cover, which shows a baby swimming naked trying to reach a US dollar, is recognized as one of the most famous music album covers.
Many had a low initial expectation for the album, but unexpectedly it becomes a commercial and critical success. Early in 1992, it becomes number one on US Billboard 200. This album is composed of songs like; smells like teen spirit, in bloom, lithium, and come as you are. All these singles were a success, and some even peaked on US Billboard Hot 100.
The success of nevermind album dint goes unnoticed. It gathered several awards, including Grammy award for being the best alternative music performance, MTV award for being the best new artist, and the single “Smell Like Teen Spirit” was nominated as the best rock song. The album was voted as the album of the year critics poll of Pazz and Jop. Overall, Nirvana has had twenty-five nominations, which translated to her receiving a total of twelve awards. I consider this as an incredible album which could have become a hit whenever it could have been released, but its timing was perfect since it came when the world was in a quench of rock music that could be meaningful once again
Since its release, nevermind album is continuing to garner critical praises after being ranked as the best 1990s album by the acclaimed music and the all-time most acclaimed album. In the year 2019, Rolling Stone went ahead and ranked this album number one in their list of the 90s the best 100 albums, it also ranked it as number one in the list of the greatest 50 grunge albums.
Worldwide, the album has sold approximately 30 million copies; hence, it is one of the best selling albums. This album holds an essential place in rock pantheon since its release. When pop music had not become much divided into subgenres, this hit rock album resonated far beyond the core audience. It can also be looked back as perhaps a rock album that was the final game-changing.
In preparation for this album, Cobain had written several songs that combined dissonant guitar riffs and pop hooks. The inspiration for the nevermind tittle was band cynicism on the reaction of the public to the Desert Storm Operation. Still, as its recording was coming to an end, Cobain becomes tired of this title and suggests to the Novoselic that the album should be named Nevermind. The idea behind the album was conceived while watching a program on television on water births though the fans have interpreted it as a metaphor. Kurt Cobain thot such an image could make a cool cover and hired a specialist in the underwater photo who took the picture for the cover page.
