NEWS STORY

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/07/17/world/europe/race-france-adama-traore.html

The article is a news piece about a woman Asa Traore who has become a champion of men in advocating against racism in France. Miss Traore electrified the crowd after chanting words of praise to the thousands who had gathered on the Place de la République in central Paris protesting against racism and showing solidarity with the black lives matters global movement. Miss Traore is no exception to police brutality and institutionalized racism. In 2016 she lost her half-brother who died as a result of police brutality.

The role of women in global advocacy in the fight against injustices is phenomenal and worth recognizing. Most women have been considered timid and full of fear. However, Asa and the rest who turned out for the protests debunks this myth. The article is timely as the world continues to fight racism and discrimination against marginalized groups worldwide. The New York Times editor has done justice to the story by highlighting the plight of underground cases such as the death of Asa’s brother which did not receive much public attention like Floyd’s untimely death.

The 21st century should be a milestone time in the combat against racism and other forms of discrimination. All over the globe, blacks face discrimination in the form of racism in the various spheres of education. Institutions which are created to protect lives have solely shifted their mandate and changed into perpetrators of the vicious ideology. Citizens of the world should not let race diminish the challenges we face as we live on the planet. Rather all races should fight jointly as we eradicate threats to our survival such as climate change and good governance. The observable bias is how racism is only documented in first world countries yet third world countries also face this problem too. For example, in the third world and developing countries such a Brazil and South Africa racism, tribalism and nepotism are visible and yet the media focusses less on them if not all. The article was very accurate because it addresses the problem that is experienced throughout the globe at a time when all energy should be channelled in fighting the Covid pandemic.
