NICHOLAS CAR
Nicholas car described that how thinking of human is influenced by technologies and how skills to think critically and paying attention are ignored nowadays. He argued and described the loss of people as our primary source of information in shifting towards the web. He argued that computer is reducing the ability of humans to think and to generate their ideas. I also agree with this that the internet is purely affecting one’s mind in focusing, reading, thinking, and creating new ideas. Same occurred with Nicholas Carr, and he explained and shared his view about what had happened with him. He said that when he started using the internet, he was unable to read whole texts without being distracted, and this was not only noticed by Nicholas carr but also by other researchers and scholars as well. According to them, it is difficult to absorb information or any blog which are over three pages because when much of the is spent by him on internet switching from one website on to the other site which diverts his mind and changed the way he used to read a piece of particular information. It also affected the way he used to think before. Plunging himself in a very long article was very easy for him at the beginning, but as soon as he indulged himself on the internet it became challenging for him to read a long and lengthy piece of information or any book, and his attention usually drifts after reading two to three pages. He was lamenting that one’s capacity to perceive text, to make connections while reading deeply without being distracted remains primarily detached. On having complete reliance on technologies with its persistent diversions and disturbances is changing human beings to disperse and superficial thinkers, which results in the splitting of our attention.
Furthermore, he believed that abundance in memory, thoughts, and personalities enhanced the capacity of a person to focus and strengthen concentration. It can only be possible when one reads a newer bit of information and can relate it significantly, profoundly and completely with information already well settled in his reminiscences. It is essential when it comes to deep and critical thinking. Deep thinking is necessary to create space for work, relations, family, and to attain positive change. When we are diverted and distracted all the times looking at screens of our mobile phones and of computer which tends our brain to become unable to build robust and extensive neural links which provide aberrant and deepness to ones thinking which can lead to muddled thoughts and may weaken one’s memory. Providing internet access to students while testing can give worse results as compared to those who were not provided with the internet because they were able to recall what was taught and can build connections without being distracted by the internet. It is directly related to the capacity of our thinking, concentration level, and retentiveness of information. Depending upon web means not realizing the ability of our brain and assigning the role of ideology and analyzing to computers, which means to rely on computers for simple and easy decisions in the future as well. Carr is talking about the benefits of internet which does work to be completed in minutes which initially took days. He is giving an opinion that people are giving up of collaboration and more in-depth viewing. Yes, one might indeed be good at multitasking, but it directly affects creativity which comes from critical thinking. The web is making us unable to think independently, in other words, it is manufacturing us to become ”stupid” so it is essential for us to de-connect ourselves from time to time (Paikin,2011).
