Nonverbal communication
English
Nonverbal communication is the process of conveying information about our needs, emotions, attitudes, intentions, and thoughts through action and behavior other than verbal language. Nonverbal skills serve as significant aspects of our social life such as expression of emotions, communicating interpersonal attitudes like friendliness, dominance, and insult and enhancing personal speech production. Different nonverbal skills depend on different emotional states, such as interests and disagreements. Facial expressions show several emotions without uttering a word, and they are universal. Body movement and posture is another nonverbal skill that considers someone’s perceptions based on the way they sit, stand, and walk. The way a person moves and behaves around others communicates a lot to others. It involves posture, stance, bearing, and other movements people make. Another nonverbal skill is gestures. It involves how people wave, beckon, point, or use their hands when communicating with other people, usually when angry. Gestures have different meanings depending on the culture. Eye contact is also another nonverbal skill that is dominant in most people. The way you look at someone communicates a lot of things such as affection, interest, or dislike. Eye contact also ensures the continuation of a conversation. Touch also communicates a lot especially a warm hug, a weak or firm handshake, and many more.
