NORTH MIAMI, FLORIDA
It is imperative to note that food and healthcare facilities are all important in the overall community health. North Miami city is located in Florida with an estimated population of 62,822 as of July 1, 2019. In this community, several factors have contributed to the adoption of various lifestyles to try and lead a healthy life. However, with various issues such as poverty, people have not been able to lead a healthy lifestyle. Poverty levels are said to be at 21.5% according to the U.S. Census Bureau (U.S. Census Bureau, n.d.). If the percentage of poverty is converted to the number of people living in poverty, it will translate to a considerable number of people. As such it is a major social issue affecting health in this community.
Another social factor that has led to a lot of individuals in this community not to purchase groceries as much as they can is the affordability of housing. A staggering number of people living in this community can hardly afford to live in their community (Viglucci, 2019). Due to this, individuals have to forego certain things like groceries so that they can afford to pay rent. From the salaries that they earn, a considerable amount is used for rent and also there are other needs in the families that have to be catered for with the same salary making it difficult for them to purchase certain groceries.
As a nurse, one could use outreach as a way to improve the health of the community. Outreach can be said to an effective toolkit that will help in driving community health and also reach every individual that lives in rural areas or vulnerable urban communities (Heath, 2017). By using this intervention, a nurse can be able to reach every patient in the community at a much lower cost thus reducing their expenditure on health (Heath, 2017). By reaching out to individuals, the nurse will know the root cause of a problem and the health issues associated with it.
