Nursing Leadership Styles

Most research generally focuses on identifying the characteristics of good leadership in nursing with minimal consideration on inner strengths that cultivate them to be a good leader. According to Poorchangizi, Farokhzadian, Abbaszadeh, Mirzaee and Borhani (2017), Strength is a fundamental factor that helps leaders quickly adopts leadership approaches that can generate constructive organizational cultures, performance, and employee engagement as well as improving high level of innovation. Having the ability to identify one’s strength places a leader in a position to improve his leadership traits. Major point of discussion this week is about my strength as a leader based on the assessment from Gallup’s Strength Finder namely; ideation, strategic, Arranger, input and Communication (Gallup, 2019). Nevertheless, being a clinical educator within the emergency department of my workplace, my position has minimal consideration in leadership role. However, identifying my inner strength is critical as an educator to the nurses in my department.

Strengths

The report by Clifton Strength assessment reveals my key strength as Communication and Input. (Gallup, 2019) argues that communication is a perfect tool of putting together minds into words. Though, communication not only adds value to a group, but also improves the level of reasoning within leadership (Scully, 2015). As a clinical educator, Communication is a solid process that requires much practice to perfect my skills. This will enable me to interact more effectively with my colleagues and top management in the facility. Meanwhile, input, is the ability to gather and store complex, convoluted and vital information that most of the people rely on. Leaders with this strength tend to be clear and easy to understand.  Through fostering this strength as an informal leader to the nurses in the emergency department, I would help individual recall or remember any necessary information that adds value in their profession.

Core Values

The most unbroken component in all settings within educational and clinical nursing is the core values. Core values motivate and guide people in the nursing profession during their respective duties (Poorchangizi et al., 2017). Major core values I would like to strengthen is a caring based approach of commitment to leadership and the willingness to stand with different opinions. These core values will intensely impact the Arranger and strategic themes identified in the Clifton Strength assessment report.

Characteristics

The major characteristics I would like to strengthen are the theme of ideation and individualism. Ideation involves developing and exchanging ideas Gallup. (2019). In the emergency department, idealistic is a critical concept nurses must quickly have when handling newly emerging situations. The Ideation will strengthen my leadership through working as a team with commitment and active participation in teamwork activity. While working as a team, I will be able to demonstrate to my clinical staff new Idealistic concepts that can help the department develop innovative ways of handling emergency situations to promote sustainability. Notwithstanding, individualization is another characteristic that I would strengthen on. Individualization gives me the capability as a leader to be captivated by the unique qualities of each individual within the emergency department. As a clinical educator, this would enable me to identify the strength and weakness of every staff and develop ways of countering the possible threat the weaknesses can cause in the department. Besides, the theme of individualism focuses on my individual attitude, interests and skills, thus eliminating the uniqueness of staffs and develops my potential.
