Objectivism vs Altruism
The philosophies of objectivism and altruism have various strengths and weaknesses. These are some of the philosophies that most men utilize to co-exist with one another. Some of the strengths of objectivism as compared to altruism include; a man uses his mind as a tool to perceive it (“Ayn Rand – Objectivism vs Altruism”, 1:18). He will use his mind to judge what is wrong and right and differentiate between the two. Secondly, while reasoning, he bases this on logic free of any emotions or attachment to external forces. With this approach, he will be able to confront things in life with much clarity as compared to when he uses altruism. Another strength is that when a man uses objectivism, he will use reason as the only guide to act independently and act as an end to himself. He will not be forced to doing something for another man or place his love above himself but only give it to individuals that deserve it (“Ayn Rand – Objectivism vs Altruism”, 2:34).
On the other hand, objectivism also has weaknesses when compared to altruism. For instance, it denies human beings to have an emotional connection with one another. Through emotions, people are able to understand the troubles they are going through and come up with ways to solve them. The philosophy also fails to appreciate the existence of a supernatural being that has to be served by men through serving others and ensuring their happiness (“Ayn Rand – Objectivism vs Altruism”, 4:50). The philosophy has a weakness because it does not allow a man to help a fellow because they do not deserve it, or because they do not adhere to the standards that an individual may have set in a logical manner.
