Organizational Structure
Introduction
The assessment is based on a restaurant business, which is an organization that serves food and drinks eaten from the premises. The organization is a middle-class eatery offering food and drinks for middle-income earners. It also offers takeaway services for people who wish to take the food from far since it is located in a town. One of the goals of the organization is to offer great patron experience through excellent services such that the people who come to enjoy the food and come again later. The other goal is to increase revenues through excellent services. The third is to provide high-quality services and food such that the customer makes the restaurant their destination. The three functional areas essential to the organizational structure includes human resource, sales, and marketing, finance, and accounting.
Functional area 1
The first organizational structure is the human resources, and its primary purpose is to handle all the issues related to employees. These include hiring, training, scheduling, monitoring, and reporting employees’ performance. The human resource looks at the interests of the employees, starting from hiring them to work and probably firing. Human resource has one of the greatest functions in the organization since it is the one that looks for the right personnel for the job based on the details of the organizational specifications. Human resources also ensure the person fits in the organization by offering training, scheduling their jobs, and conducts assessments to identify the suitability and success of the employees. Human resources form the backbone of the organization and support all the other functions. The reason is that the success of the organizations depends on the quality of the employees.
The human resource functional area is the channel through which the organization achieves the set goals. All the goals identified related to quality service, revenues increase, and customer experiences are realized through a well-organized human resource. The employees are the ones who handle the customers directly, for instance, by serving them, and hence their activities create the difference between achievement and non-achievement of the goals. An organization succeeds when the employees are hired based on qualification and experience, trained and monitored to ensure the organization succeeds.
Functional area 2
Sales and marketing refer to the activities that entail the promotion, selling, and distribution of goods and services. The main purpose of marketing is to focus on the presales activities related to the customer, particularly surveys, to understand customer needs. The marketing functional area scrutinizes what the customer wants through different interaction strategies. Sales function ships in by realizing a close relationship with the customers. The purpose of sales is to ensure that the customer purchase the product, for instance, eat in the restaurant after convincing information from the marketer. Marketing supports the organizational structure by helping the company to identify the needs of the customers and hence create products that address the needs. It also helps in creating awareness of the product, which is vital for the success of the sales function. In the restaurant business, for instance, the function ensures that customers know about the foods and services provided and hence visit the facility. All the other activities are only successful if the restaurant connects well with the customers, which stresses its importance.
Sales and marketing play a huge role in realizing the company’s revenue goal, which is essential for success in other areas. First, sales and marketing help the organization in understanding what the customers want in terms of quality and menu in the restaurant business. Through this information, the organization offers quality products and services to meet the expectations as communicated hence achieving the good of quality services. These services offer a great experience, which ensures that customers visit the facility time and again after their first encounter. An improvement in sales and marketing functions enhances the restaurant business by offering the products and services required by the clients leading to organizational success.
Functional area 3
Finance and accounting is also an important functional area since it involves money. Accounting focuses on daily financial transactions in an organization. At the same time, finance is concerned with long term and broad issues related to all the factors that generate or take away money, including assets and liabilities. Whereas accounting involves the purpose of accounting is to accurately record all the transactions between the organization and other parties. On the other hand, the purpose of financing areas in a restaurant is to plan, source, and manage all the funds brought into the company. The financial area focuses on the long and short term impacts of the financial policies and determines the best course of action as the major purpose. Accounting and finance are essential in supporting the overall organizational structure since they help in directing resources where they are required most and will lead to maximum benefits. The success of the area leads to success in others since the organization cannot function without proper financial accounting.
Finance and accounting play a very critical role since it affects other levels of service delivery. The goal of quality customer experience is only realized through adequate investment. Money is, however, not always enough, and the role of finance and accounting becomes relevant. In this case, the organization manages the available resources well by using the money prudently and ensuring money is allocated in areas that improve quality. One of these is investing in qualified chefs and sourcing ingredients that will please the clients. Most of the activities that improve the customer experiences require finances, and hence the areas facilitate organizational success. Proper financial accounting directs money where it should be and prevents misuse of resources, which eventually leads to organizational success.
Recommended Organizational Structure
The best organizational structure for the three functional areas identified is the functional structure. In a functional structure, the major areas in the organization are departmentalized, such that each handles a specific function. For instance, there would be a human resource department, sales, and marketing, finance, and accounting. Depending on the size of the restaurant, it can have a CEO and managers, each handling one of the functional areas. Functional organization structure is similar to the traditional structure but is updated in that there are increased communication lines. In this case, a manager in one department can give orders to employees who are not directly under their department but whose services are necessary for its success. For instance, the sales and marketing manager can give orders of payment to a marketing firm to the finance department. The functional structure helps the employees to specialize in a specific role but still gets information from the other departments, which are necessary for the restaurant industry.
These recommendations are justified in a restaurant business since the organizational structure is not rigid. Although there are well-defined lines of communication, the managers are not limited to this but can apply any of the situation demand. The functional structure seeks to ensure that all the functions run smoothly regardless of the person giving orders. A functional; organizational structure is also justified since it is the only way employees will specialize in their areas and, at the same time, assists in the running of the organization through vertical communication. For instance, the human resource manager can understand the employees under this department by specializing and still communicate with other necessary departments.
Conclusions
The recommended structure will go a long way in helping the organization to realize the goals related to quality, experience, and revenues. First, the structure will enable the employee under each functional area to specialize in a particular department. For instance, the marketer will stick to their role and hence come up with better strategies for increasing the customers. Once customers are attracted, the human resource will maintain them by offering superb experiences and lead to increased revenues. In this way, the organization will provide quality services as envisioned by the goal and increase revenues. Success will be further enhancing by the nature of communication associated with this structure. The recommended structure allows vertical communication meaning that a manager can give specific orders to employees under other departments. In this case, the manager can make quick decisions that are necessary for the restaurant business and help in achieving the set goals. For example, the marketing manager may realize an employee mistreating the customer, and instead of waiting for the human resource manager to correct the situation, do it immediately. The recommendation thus stands to help the organization enhance service delivery and achieve the set goals.mm
