In week 7, I learned about paraphrasing and reflecting. Reflecting is letting the client get a clear picture of what they’re saying, and this shows you are engaged with what is being said. Paraphrasing reflects what the client has said using lesser words and without changing the meaning. I also learned about the Johari Window Model, which helps provide insights into your behavior and others’ behavior. I learned the importance of open communication, self-disclosure, and how group feedbacks help us grow.
In week 8, I was thought about summarizing. Summarizing in counseling is to grasp the main points of what the client is saying. It reflects the main points, giving a recap to the client of what he/she said. Summary clarifies the emotions, reviews the work, begins a subsequent session, keeps us focused & keeps the session moving forward. A summary is more extensive than paraphrasing. Paraphrasing and Summarizing are bonded together because, to summarize, we need to paraphrase first, which saves us time and gives a good impression in the workplace.
In week 9, we had pre-answering and test. In pre-answering, Sir Roseli taught us how to paraphrase and summarize a situation by watching a video. I learned to grasp the emotions and the feelings of the given client from the video. I also learned, in summary, we should not use could have, might have, etc. After the pre-test, I did my test on summarizing and paraphrasing and submitted it.
