Parenting Behavior
How people parent their children is different from one person to another. Although some parenting methods may be learned from parents, the behavior is influenced by several factors including genetics and environmental factors. Parenting styles are affected by the genetic make-up of the parents. The way people care for their offspring is likely a component of genetics. One will most likely give the same care to their children as that they were given by their parents. Based on a study involving 20,000 families, 23% to 40% of parenting styles is accounted for by genes. Research shows that parenting is a process that is influenced by the environment and genes at the same time.
Apart from the genetic influence, parenting can change based on environmental experiences. For example, a parent living in a city experiencing violent conflicts will most likely care differently than those living in peaceful environments. In this case, the parents in violent environments are always concerned about the whereabouts of the children and will instruct them not to go to places that are far away from their homes. For those in peaceful places, they do not worry a lot when their children go far places since they believe they will be safe. Violent conflicts push parents to adopt new parenting methods that will ensure their children stay safe.
