Physical Security
Importance of the Chapter
This chapter “Approaches to Physical security” is vital to me for the following reasons. First, it lays bare the different levels of security and their characteristics. The five levels of security give insight and thoughtful way to look for my residential premises and the way I would want them to be set up. The characteristics described for each level make it easier for me to decide the best security that I would like to have depending on my social status in the society.
Secondly, the chapter gives a detailed analysis in which I can use to determine the type of security level I need. The section provides for how you can identify priority and how best to determine which security is fit for your current condition. For instance, in my home, depending on the valuables and the history of my neighbourhood, I may decide to advance the security level. The analysis provided a better way which can help me to improve my home security and how to determine priorities.
Moreover, as an eyeing security director, I would benefit from insightful ideas offered in the chapter as I seek to advance my career in security. I would benefit from the planning and strategizing discussed in the episode so that I would excel in my career. I would as well employ some of the analysis in the section in my future assignments as I believe it is insightful with a proper guide to making a better security system.
Surprising Fact
The surprising thing about this chapter is how psychology is embedded in determining the security system. I would say it is the most extraordinary since I have never thought psychology would play a role in identifying and setting up the security system. However, as I read through this chapter, I have established that it is crucial to play with the psychology of the potential criminal; hence you minimize the risk of someone attacking your property.
My Perception of Physical Security
Physical security is planned for a process that has stages which should be executed accordingly. I tend, therefore, to think that physical security is a profession with laid down structures which should be followed to achieve the desired result. This chapter discusses that in planning for security, you mostly plan for the high-risk issue identified which in the end caters for low-risk problems. According to what I have read from the chapter, physical security is detailed, and it is an issue of details and prioritizing on the possible threats.
Nonetheless, physical security is a planned discipline which takes into account several issues apart from neutralizing possible threats. I note this since physical security takes into account technological advancements, personnel, finance, among others. Physical security, therefore, looks beyond protection as it seeks to offer quality and guarantee of what it would do. Thus, physical security is beyond mere protection of property.
What I Would Change
I wouldn’t say I liked the fact that planning would have priorities that would propel the designing of a security system—for instance, designing a system to prevent a specific foreseeable crime whereas treating other possible crimes as invincible. I would change the fact that whenever designing a physical security system, it should consider all potential threats and create a system that will lock out those threats. All possible risks should be treated equally, and the physical security system should focus on minimizing all the dangers posed.
Also, I wouldn’t say I liked the fact that the physical security design perseveres for a few chosen people working in a particular company. In the event of an attack or accident, employees without access will be left at the mercies of the attackers. Thus, I would suggest that access should be given to all employees.
