Introduction
“The invention of various techniques in writing has significantly improved literature, writers have improved their skills. The printing press was a great achievement for literature as volumes of works would be made available to many people. However, the change did not only affect technical things but also the reception and production of literature. Technology has significantly improved literature. Today we shall discuss how effective podcasts have been in literature by addressing how Sarah Koenig. The effectiveness of technology in the analysis of the report by Koenig shall be addressed in this speech so that we can learn how technology has transformed literature, making it better. In addition to that, we shall evaluate Serial based on a framework that depends on a combination of ethical principles that will be drawn from the tenets, of both nonfictional storytelling and journalism within the confinements of artistic expression.
The analysis starts by questioning whether or not Koenig was a journalist in the context, either by implication, admission or otherwise. At the start of the first episode in the podcast, Koenig was quoted saying that she was not a private investigator or detective. She further stated that he was not even a crime reporter. This was to make it clear to everyone that she acted on her own. Her works were independent of any media source and she was fully liable for the information that was being analyzed. She also made it known that in the past she was a reporter for The Baltimore Sun, therefore she had the necessary skills to gather credible information that would be analyzed for crucial evidence to a case. Nonetheless, during episodes seven and eight she refers to herself as the reporter. Those are the few times during the entire episodes she referred to herself as the reporter. This is because she was doing the reposing in those episodes of the podcast.
Throughout the entire podcast, Koenig takes her role as an exercise in nonfictional, narrative storytelling. Despite this, Koenig has made an overt and sustainable effort to remain unbiased, even-handed, and ethical in her analysis. She acknowledges when wrong or speculating so that she could mitigate the harm that could result from her analysis to the people she talks about or deals with by observing the professional code of ethics.
In literature, Koenig uses storytelling as the primary tool to make her analysis and report. The method was effective in solving potential ethical dilemmas, questions issues, and considerations related to Serial. All the episodes in the podcast had an overview of issues at hand, along with an assessment or brief analysis of the ethical implications which are associated with the issue. These skills were needed as she was supposed to remain neutral in her narration as well as private investigation of the wrongful conviction of a murder suspect Adnan Syed. Syed had languished in prison serving eighteen years for the murder of Hae Min Lee, his ex-girlfriend. Koenig looked into the case as many people were not convinced with the ruling of the and she wanted to get to the bottom of the matter to figure out whether Syed was innocent as people believed. This was a tricky assignment since she had to do so without violating or provoking the authorities. The more cautious she became the more likely she was to get the truth.
Koenig tried all she could to remain objective throughout the podcast shining a spotlight on questions that had never been answered all that time that Syed had been serving his sentence. In her investigations, she uncovers crucial evidence from witnesses that had not been used in the trial and could have changed the ruling of the court. The accused had also been denied the right to effective assistance of counsel. This gives a different twist to the analysis of the case since there was a high likelihood that Syed had been used as a scapegoat for a murder cover-up. Koenig does not indicate this in the podcast but her reporting in the eight podcast makes it easy for those analyzing her work to make such a conclusion. Koenig only makes things clear and easy for every person to interpret and make their independent conclusion.
The primary objective by Koenig was to deliver information to the audience in a manner that they could best understand. The Serial has become a perfect tool for analyzing literature especially those using modern technology such as podcasts using narration. Koenig was effective in her works since she constantly engaged the audience with rhetorical decisions that they had to make themselves. By so doing the audience is made to think more of the meaning of the message that the narrator could be passing to them. In episode eight, Koenig interviews with a juror. She introduces him as such and continues with the interview. She later introduces a retired detective who was willing to take part in the podcast as others had refused. She takes more time to introduce the detective so that the audience can be assured of his qualifications and significance in analyzing the case of Syed’s trial. As I conclude the speech, I would emphasize the need for the credibility of a source of literature as Koenig had done, so that the audience can know that it was from a reliable source.
