Popular culture and Obesity.
Popular culture can lead to obesity in the following ways; overeating and inactivity. Children tend to stay glued on the televisions most of their time while not engaging in vigorous exercise. Additionally, television tends to advertise watching snacks, which contain high calories and less nutritional value.
According to Sternheimer, these connections are complicated because they do not address some phenomena. The relationship between popular culture and obesity only focuses on children, forgetting the fact that they are many adults who are overweight courtesy of watching television for long hours(Sternheimer,2013). However, some factors may play a greater role, and they include; children who reside from low-income urban areas have few playgrounds, which may condemn them to stay indoors and watch (Sternheimer,2013). Moreover, parents who live in low-income urban areas prefer to have their children indoors to save them from dangerous streets. This sort of inactivity, and not popular culture, leads to children being obese.
