Popular TV shows

You are what you watch and I would say that observing what people watch is a sure way of knowing the kind of people they are. Apart from being a platform to watch news TVs are important in introducing us to our culture and educating us on various social issues. Although they form an exaggerated version of real life, they are vital in telling us about the dynamics of everyday life. But does TV shows portray what is important in our society? I feel they do, and my arguments in this particular paper support my position.

A family is the foundation of good morals in society and learning how to have a healthy and strong family is vital in any society. Any TV show portraying this is indeed showing what is important and “Modern Family” has been working on that by reflecting on what American Families look like today. It highlights the difference between various American households. The differences between the families teach us essential things in making a family the place to learn good morals and also appreciating our differences. The show focuses on how families should interact with each other rather than how they should interact with the world (Stump and Associates, p. 1). It is a show that insists on building a strong family, and it beats logic to assume that TV shows do not portray important things in society.

Education for our children is a vital role in society that many TV shows play. Although most of the TV shows for children emphasize entertainment, many shows are skewed towards the pre-school set and focus on early learning (Ducharme et al., p. 271). We cannot disagree that teaching cognitive and life skills is an important thing for children. We have many TV shows depicting our culture and diversity and including emotional and social education that is crucial for children. Various social science researches show that the quality of TV shows can influence people in many ways like growing our cognitive ability and shaping our political views (Rothwell, p.1). Saying that popular TV shows do not portray what is important is thus deviating from the truth.

If you love your life then you must agree with me that any topic meant to improve your health is important. Having a popular TV show portraying health issues and educating people about improving their health is one of the most significant things we can praise them for doing (Ali, p. 319). Among the many TV shows about health is The Doctors. It is comprised of a panel of doctors who discuss various health topics. This group of medical specialists delivers important health information to the viewers in an easily digestible approach. They divide different topics and take turns in educating the public about them. This is why I strongly disagree with any person who says that popular TV shows do not portray what is important in society.

In conclusion, many popular TV shows portray important topics that are beneficial to the viewers. You may have seen some of them portraying what is not so important to society but you need to make the right selection of your shows. The “Modern Family” discusses family issues, “The Doctors” educates people on health matters, and many others help children develop their cognitive ability. These are some of the many shows that portray important things to society.
