Potential Barriers that Prevents Sustaining of Evidence-Based Practice Proposal Change and Strategies to Overcome the Barriers
The long espousal of evidence-based practice (EBP) is significant for improving nurses practicing abilities in rendering quality patient care and improve patient upshots (Koehn and Lehman,2008). Despite its growing recognition to support advancement nursing, there have been barriers that unravel efforts to sustain and implement the EBP change proposal successfully. Some of the latent barriers include resistance to a new practice, shortage of nurses, and certified nursing assistant (CNA).
Resistance to new practice is one of the potential barriers to the sustainability of the EBP change proposal. It may be triggered by a lack of knowledge, persuasion, choice, resources, authorization, and organizational culture that does not support the new practice. Having support from the organization’s management as a key and trusted stakeholder from the beginning is a significant aspect of overcoming the barrier. The organization may be able to help in developing an organizational culture that supports the new practice, give information about other successful projects that used similar implementation practices, and involve experts who are familiar with the institutional culture to help in providing evidence on implementing EBP, assist nurses in understanding EBP benefits and bringing the desired change to facilitate uptake of a new practice.
EBP depends on the number of workforces. The shortage of nurses and CNA affects its sustainable implementation. The nurses are subjected to heavy workload, lack of motivation, time to research, and commit to the program. Multidisciplinary teamwork among the medical professionals in the healthcare organization will reduce workload, give time, and motivate nurses to implement and realize the desired changes in EBP. (Koehn & Lehman, 2008).
