Practice Analysis
Part I: Initial Post
Post a description of an inaccuracy or accuracy concerning race or class dynamics in one film or television series. Explain your analysis. What make the show or film accurate or inaccurate? Are there any specific scenes or characters that show the accuracy or inaccuracy? Aim for a paragraph of writing.
Part II
Comment and interact with one of your peer’s posts. Do you have other examples of the inaccuracies or accuracies to add? Do you see any potential research areas? Remember, make sure all of your classmates have a reply post.
Example Initial Post
The television show Gilmore Girls has many inaccurate depictions of single-motherhood and the economic struggles they face in America. In the show, the main character, Lorelai, does not appear to struggle economically the way many other single mothers do in America. Most of her economic problems are solved by her rich parents. For example, her daughter, Rory, attends an expensive private school. Since her grandparents are rich, they are able to fully fund Rory’s education to a private school and then to an ivy-league college. Many single-mothers struggle to make ends meet and would not be able to send their children to a private school or Yale in real life.
Example Reply Post:
Dear So and So,
This is a great point. I never thought about how the rich grandparents solve many of the economic problems in Gilmore Girls. Your examples about education are interesting. I think you could research this further– what are the educational outcomes for children of single mothers? I also think the show never has any episodes where Rory and Lorelai struggle with time or money. For example, they own their own home. Some of our unit readings discuss the high cost of housing that does not seem to ever be an issue in the show. This could be something else to research.
