Professional Goals Statement
My choice for nursing was brought on by my past experiences, which made me appreciate Family Nurse Practitioner as a field and all its values. When I was young, I helped nurse my ailing grandmother even though I had to watch her die. As early as six, I learned to be responsible and serve others unconditionally. One of my goals is to expand my professional knowledge. My grandmother always said that “knowledge is power.” In my opinion, learning is a continuous process that never stops. The nursing field is a gratifying field, and I must learn new practices and skills to grow in this profession. Even as I take measures to develop personally, I seek to develop professionally as well. My experience at Elmhurst Hospital has made me appreciate what I do for my patients. I find taking care of patients and nursing them back to health satisfactory. I would like to carry all my experiences to the primary care setting, provide excellent patient-centered care, enhance my skills, and become an expert in what I do.
Nursing is one of the few professions that can bring about direct change in someone’s life and my lifelong goal is to provide ongoing community services. I grew up in a community that had a high number of people affected by high blood pressure and diabetes. Sadly, seeing a doctor was considered to be a waste of time. People mostly sought after leaf doctors or herbalists with whom they felt more comfortable; they did not understand that high blood pressure and diabetes called more for lifestyle changes. I wish to reach out to more people and change their perceptions regarding diseases and health care to better their lives. By being aware of their cultural sensitivity, I can provide care and educate my community on Health issues as a Family Nurse Practitioner. A degree in this profession would help me gain the needed skills to help me reach out to more people and help them embrace good preventive health care. I strongly believe a Family Nurse Practitioner degree at Molloy College will empower me to reach my goals.
