Psychological Skills Training Programs For Athletes
Abstract
Psychological skills training involves athletics objectives that improve the value and fitness of athletes. The training equips athletes with a commitment to the sport, concentration increases, and the motivation to work on weaknesses. Physical exercise has resulted in positive effects on sports. Mental training has played a vital role in the success of athletes in the Olympics and other sports activities. Athletes must conduct physical and psychological training. However, young athletes need to set manageable goals in their shorter training sessions. Athletes will acquire self-awareness skills that will help in decision making and goal determination. Athletes have programs on how to practice their psychological skills training. The program stipulates the time and days of the practice before the main activity. For psychological skills training to be successful, athletes will need a qualified supervisor or a fitness training instructor. The coach can be the best candidate for such a task. The presence of a supervisor/trainer will improve performance among athletes; there will be few or no misunderstandings. The coach will provide programs for athletes concerning psychological skills training. The main therapeutic goal of the training program is that athletes will build a connection of positivity. There are professional interaction and consultation with athletes since coach effectiveness training has made it easy for coaches to understand their self-awareness (Singh, 2018).
Part 1; value and purpose of a psychological skills training program
Athletes will always work towards success in their careers. For success to be realized, psychological skills training plays a vital role. It contributes to 60-95% of their performance on the track. PST brings about goal setting, self-talk, mental imagery, and relaxation of an athlete’s mind. However, each athlete has a different sports performance need. Success means a lot to an athlete as it brings self-satisfaction. PST is significant to all athletes and also goes well with non-athletes for body fitness and good health. Most athletes have trainers qualified in psychological skills training. Qualified personnel are well adapted to training athletes and will respect their confidentiality and values. PST doesn’t only involve physical exercise, diet is important in the success of psychological skills training.
Psychological skills training has a positive effect on the performance of athletes in sports. Research has shown that athletes with PST have achieved success from time to time. The best time for psychological training is during season breaks. The athletes will be out of sporting programs and will have a humble time in receiving PST. Athletes should practice psychological skills at least 15-30 minutes of their practice time 3-5 days a week for 3-6 months. Practicing these skills helps in their consistency in athletics and it should be self-driven to athletes. Athletes will acquire additional achievements from PST since they will be able to manage their behaviors and will have goals. Athletes can identify problems and be committed to their weaknesses and hence change positively.
Part 2; Outcomes that can be monitored in a psychological skills training program
The program PST has a great impact on positive mental attitude in that athletes can identify their problems. They become committed to change, evaluating behaviors, and striving towards their success. Athletes have understood that a greater percentage of the game is greatly dependent on mental fitness. With psychological skills training, coping with mistakes and failures has been easy. Coaches are sometimes unaware of the mistakes they make and athletes are well equipped with psychological skills to deal with such problems. However, coach effectiveness training has made it possible for coaches to provide a socially supportive environment for athletes. It has improved the coach’s self-awareness of mistakes that occur. With CET, there is a realization of coach and athlete interaction with positive performance outcomes. Coaches have established a good cognitive thought control through CET, which impacts the team’s success. Therefore there is teamwork and positivity between athletes and supervisors. To the advantage of athletes, success is realized as a result of psychological skills training.
Part 3; outline the foundational skills that could be achieved by the athletes in a psychological skills training program
Athletes benefit much from psychological skills training. They can focus on the meaning of goal determination and can exploit their abilities in athletics directed to set objectives. They become goal-oriented and are motivated by their coaches. Motivational factors and psychological development play a vital role in success. Athletes and other sports personnel can communicate with respect and determination to achieving success. PST has raised self-awareness among athletes and has helped in decision making. They have been motivated to work on their weaknesses and to better in career. Athletes have been able to set goals, monitor, and evaluate their performance. A lot of sportswomen and men have become responsible and have developed on much after acquiring psychological skills training. However, according to research, PST has facilitated discussion of important issues concerning athletics. They have grown confidence in issues that affect them and their career.
