Quantitative Article review
The article “Teaching Quantitative Courses Online: Are Learning Tools Offered by Publishers Effective?”, discusses the efficiency of various tools offered for online learning. Online learning is gaining popularity in the academic field. However, teaching effectively during these online classes is a challenge that most teachers face. When it comes to teaching quantitative courses, the challenge increases. Publishers have offered a helping hand to instructors of quantitative methods by inventing different tools that help in teaching and also evaluation. This article focuses on a publisher tool from Pearson’s MyOmLab called Quiz Me Mastery points. This was done by comparing the student’s performance with the Mastery points they earned when using this publisher’s feature to determine if there was any correlation significance.
For this correlation study, data was collected from examining the performance of students on assessments and the mastery points earned through the Quiz Me feature. The researchers observed 174 students in four semesters which amounts to 3,000 personal assessment scores (Ahmadi et al., 2019). This ensured that the data was reliable. During the collection of data for this study, a minimum of 80% was set as the minimum self-test score, where the student had to repeat the assessment if they failed to earn the Mastery Point (Ahmadi et al.,2019). The number of attempts was unlimited. Data were then analyzed with chapter wise scores as the dependent variable while course level, mastery score and mastery time were the independent variable.
The study results showed a positive correlation between online student performance and the quiz Me feature. This shows that tools developed for online learning by publishers can help improve the efficiency of these programs. Although they could not determine whether the time spent on this feature contributed to performance, the other independent variables had an impact on the academic performance of the students. This study also indicated the more room for research that is whether the requirement to earn mastery scores before attempting a chapter assessment have an impact on the student’s performance.
