Jao wanted to stay true to the company’s vision but she knew OTA competition was fierce and was becoming more fiercer therefore she had to do something to increase the company’s revenue. And the only way for her to increase company revenue is by practicing dynamic pricing.
Question 2: ethical arguments that could be made for and against the use of the algorithm and dynamic pricing.
Dynamic pricing and algorithm are being defended on the fact that higher prices are important to equilibrate demand and supply while lower prices will lead to a wasteful queuing. Technology has enabled companies to be able to access information about customer’s willingness to pay and his or her ability, therefore, being in a position to increase or lower prices. According to utilitarianism ethical theory based on beneficence, I think its ethical to maximize profits so far you are not harming someone and can’t cause damages.
Though dynamic pricing helps in rationing access to scarce resources, today people are increasing prices for profitable reasons which ethically is not acceptable. According to Kantian ethics, you should treat people the same way you would want to be treated. Therefore increasing prices for the rich so that you can exploit them and gain profits, it’s not ethically right. Antitrust enforcers should prohibit dynamic pricing that is exploiting people even if it’s legally acceptable.
Question 3:what is the difference, if any, between Jao doing this and Tina creating false reviews in “Online Identities.
Dynamic pricing is fluctuating prices of services based on algorithms while a false review is whereby someones creates positive or negative review which is not the actual consumer’s opinion. Researchers and economists have shown that in dynamic pricing there is negation between the seller and buyer therefore resulting in different prices between customers while in the false review there is no negation. In dynamic pricing most companies deep in detail customers information to be able to know what he or she is willing to pay and therefore offer them targeted deals which is not the case in false review.
