Racism is the conviction that the various behavioral features of groups of people relate to physical attributes and can be differentiated based on dominance between races (Fanning, 2018). Besides, it can also include bigotry, hostility, or antagonism to others, since they are of a different race or sex. These views are essentially superiors or lower among different races based on alleged common in cohesive features, skills, or attributes in social behavior, practice, or belief or political systems. The paper aims at discussing how specific psychological theories and variables relate to an understanding of why racism issues occur and how to address them.
Many people have an overt and clear animosity of the white to members of an underprivileged ethnic community to racial discrimination. However, discrimination may include more than just overt action like job rejection. It can also be indirect and unintentional like nonverbal manipulation of posture and voice tonality. Racism may be based on general stereotypes that are believed to extend to members of a marginalized ethnic community. The consequence of administrative processes can also be discriminatory instead of individual behavior.
Borrowing from (Elias, and Feagin, 2016), sociological aspects explore the problems of race and ethnicity: functionality, and symbolic interaction. Racial differences have played a significant role in surviving for as long as they are functional. Racism may make a positive contribution to the functioning of society through the ostracism of out-of-group members, reinforcing relations between members of internal groups. The symbolic interactionists argue that race and ethnicity have clear symbols. Race stereotypes are what contribute to bigotry, not race itself. Race discrimination is formed by interactions with members of the dominant group. Without these interactions, people will not hold racial views within the dominant group. Racism has a great impact on the individual or community. People should, therefore, confront it as it may provoke strong emotions to those receiving it.
In conclusion, racism is the conviction that the various behavioral features of groups of people relate to physical attributes and can be differentiated based on dominance between races. Racism is wrong and should be avoided at all costs.
