The author states the importance of deciding whom one wants to be as he or she shines the light on others (Northouse, 2018). A leader has to harness the areas of his or her strength, focusing on the various factors that he or she has control over. It is through this that a leader earns his position.

It is important to create bridges for success as they help facilitate the process. The human resource is a very important factor and therefore, it is of great importance to create a closer link with the team members and the other relevant stakeholders. It is important to develop a peaceful environment within the workplace as this guarantees free interaction among the member of the organization. The leader needs to serve as the lighthouse to the activities of the organization as all the other members look upon him or her. Generally, the author outlines his main ideas on leadership based on building personal standards.

Just as the author outlines, personal attributes play an important role in shaping the success of an individual in leadership. The attributes determine how the leader interacts with his or her juniors and therefore, the influence he or she gains in the group. The argument of the author is basically based on the trait theories of leadership that analyze how individual traits determines the kind of a leader he or she is. The best course of action is chosen depending on the variables at hand and how they are likely to affect the performance of the organization.

Applicability

The criminal justice system is also one of the areas that require a clear understanding of the principles of leadership. The art of leadership is not only a matter of having an influence on others but also requires the skills of communication, and collaboration and teamwork. Criminal justice mainly depends on these kinds of integral skills of leadership to coordinates the efforts in multiple disciplines towards a common goal. However, personal traits play a key role in leadership as people tend to believe in an individual who portrays the desired skills in leadership. All the skills of communication, collaboration and teamwork are based on the personality of an individual. Therefore, just as the author states, a leader in criminal justice needs to have an understanding of his or her traits that makes him or her a good leader.

Having knowledge of the best traits in leadership that a leader need to have is the most important step in leadership. As an individual aspiring to be a leader, these factors will serve as a guideline as I develop my skills in leadership. The ideas explained by the author will help me understand the basic personalities that I need to develop and the level at which they contribute to leadership. Mainly, leadership is based on the personality of the leader and how it relates to the basic skills of leadership that an individual has. I will, therefore, focus on using my traits to develop best the leadership principles that I need to have as a leader.
