Cultivating Everyday Courage

Having courage in the workplace is a skill that everyone should cultivate. Given an opportunity, most people at the job place would fight the old era of discrimination and oppression. Very few have what it takes to bring out what is required at the job place. This is because a large percentage of people are afraid of the outcome after speaking out. They might never be promoted and also the worst can be being fired. In this case, they opt to continue being oppressed as long as they can keep their positions. On the contrary, some of the people who have taken the bulls by their horns have had it good on their positions at the job place. Their actions have led them to be promoted to higher ranks for being competently courageous. There are various issues and situations that one must consider before and during taking the initiative of bringing change in the job place.

Identify the groundwork

Laying down the groundwork is an important issue that must be put into consideration before going a step of bringing change in the job place. Identifying the groundwork simply means creating a favorable environment within the surrounding that can be used as a medium to create a positive change in the workplace. A selfless changemaker must first perform very well at the job place. This means working best towards achieving the goals of the organization. Additionally, the change-maker must create a very good relationship with the seniors, colleagues, and juniors of the organization. Both situations help create a rapport and this means they have won your trust. At this point, the change-maker can speak up on what to be improved or discarded at the workplace without necessarily hurting anyone around them.

Choosing your battles

Picking unnecessary fights at the job place does not necessarily mean you are courageous and want a change in the job place. No! Bringing change in the job place needs a wise person who knows what and when to battle. Choose which issue you want the organization to look into. In the process of choosing, ensure it is a major issue that affects everyone in the job place. Do not pick what only affects you as an individual but rather the organization as a whole. Picking what ought to affect you alone depicts your selfishness. Ensure that the issue will be taken into consideration and it is likely to bring a positive change in the organization.

Persuade and Follow up

Competently courageous people take action in speaking up about the issue that affects them in the workplace. They consider the right time to air it out and collected the correct data that will be used as evidence. Additionally, they ensure that they are not controlled by emotions but rather ensure that what they air out connects to the main agenda of the organization. Taking action alone is not enough. A follow up is also crucial. This ensures that the issues aired are taken into consideration and a promise of a change is initiated. If a change is initiated, they thank both the supporters and opposers. If the change is not initiated, a courageous person tries to make peace with anyone who could have been rubbed the wrong way.

Courage is an important virtue not only in the workplace but everywhere you go. Courage gives one the confidence and determination to pursue their desires. As much as we want a change in the workplace, one must consider the right time and channel to getting started. A good person must ensure that they identify the groundwork where they emerge the best in every aspect of the agenda of the organization. They must also choose the right time and battles which affect the organization at large. Additionally, they must take action by airing it out and follow up to ensure that the change is initiated. This will ensure that a positive change is done and at the same time, good relationships within the organization are kept.
