Reflection One- Contemporary Theories and Practices of Dialogue

Ranking the Course Learning Objective: – Yes, I met this course learning objective

Sharing an Artifact: – Difficult Conversation in HR- From week 5, discussion board. The sources addressed two major concepts, which include critical incident and action plan. Human beings face some difficulties in critical incidents that happen in normal or professional life aspects and challenge their reasoning capability. Critical incidents are issues like communication problems, ethics, skills, culture, or relationships.

Artifact Analysis: – Looking at the difficulties encountered in conversation in the human resource area, I was exposed to ideas that managing humans are quite a task. I never thought dealing with people can be an issue, especially for a manager in a given organization, until I learned that human dialogue is full of critical incidents in various forms. Worse of these incidents can be when someone is confronted with an ethical dilemma or has to deal with cultural diversity. My focus majored in issues like recruitment, training, development, compensations, and rewarding. However, this discussion board connected me to the scope of human resource dialogues from a lens of issues experienced when people interact. Dealing with HR issues encountered in dialogues requires an integration of various theoretical approaches. For example, I learned that integrating conflict management models and cross-cultural theories help develop a shared understanding of conflict issues. Contemporary theories and practices support that dialogues can have unique or valuable properties. For instance, it can strengthen individuals’ relationships and build trust. Also, dialogue help brings people into common goas or strategies. Thus, reflecting on this learning objective, I have understood that proper dialogues can make better relationships in a human resource setting.

Connection to change: Change is a crucial aspect of people’s lives and is hard to avoid. In that case, my learning objective connects with the concept of change by making me realize that better practice of dialogues is based on a change or people’s behavior. Otherwise, there will be difficult communications.

Reflection Two- Model Techniques of Active Listening

Ranking the Course Learning Objective: Yes, I met this objective

Sharing an Artifact: – Applying dialogue- From week 7, how people can understand the development of identity, introduce creativity for how to communicate, and learn from others. in this context, the discussion board provided an example of professional or personal life concerning the sense of self and identity.

Artifact Analysis: – According to scholars, communication allows people to embody in relationships with others and how this takes place to determine the basis of developing identity. Reflecting on this course context, I came to think about how people relate with one another through communication. But, how do we ensure there is good communication that will lead to the formation of better relations and build a sense of identity? The first thing to think about was active listening. Yes, active listening is the essential element to help construct identity because if people ignore what others are saying, then a lot is missed, and relationships cannot be enhanced. Reflecting on ways at which active listening is exercise, I was able to meet the course objective of familiarizing with model techniques of active listening. The latter refers to a process at which a person secures information from another or a group by paying attention, not interrupting, and taking time to know each other. Now that I am through with the course, I think this artifact of applying dialogue makes me think about how people should better communicate by paying attention to conversations. The application of dialogue connects with the course objective by reminding that better use of active listening techniques results in good dialogues.

Connection to change: – learning this course objective is connected to change in leadership through ways in which people like leaders or mangers can embrace positive active listening techniques to effect good communication in the workplace. In my work life, I must change how I communicate with people at work by listening and talking when I am supposed to. In my capstone action project, I must make necessary changes after consultation from peers and relate with the objective since I will apply active listening to gather ideas or opinions.

Reflection Three- Skills and Processes that Enhance Productive Dialogue

Ranking the Course Learning Objective: – Yes, I met the objective

Sharing an Artifact: – Non-Verbal Communication in a Zoom Video- From week 3. In this discussion board, an encounter or experience was shared about working part-time with a company that researches and analyzes industrial products. A zoom meeting was set, which incorporated 21 workers, to discuss the issue of the environment. Information given in this discussion board created an image or employees who were bored and did not cooperate fully in the meeting.

Artifact Analysis: Before this discussion board, I had not thought in depth how non-verbal communication plays an essential role even when people do not interact one-on-one.  After this discussion, I came to real sense that non-verbal cues can break or make communication, and people should pay close attention to what they do. Actions like fidgeting, eating, or portraying body postures that indicate boredom do not rhyme accurately with conversation flow. Reflecting on this habit of poor non-verbal communication depicted in the zoom meeting, I realize that these behaviors might not show a good workplace image as the course end. The observation connects with the objective that a demonstration of skills and sustenance of active dialogues requires keen on the kind of message sent non-verbally.

Connection to change: In relation to change, this learning objective helped me professionally realize good communication behaviors. About change in a leadership position, this objective is essential to remind me that I should lead by example, showing the right behaviors during communication. Change is connected to the objective through practical observations of non-verbal cues that I must portray when interacting with people in work life. The capstone action project requires students to apply skills or dialogue and good communication, and this is what the objective requires.

Reflection Four- Common Ground, Shared Understanding, and Mutual Benefit

Ranking the Course Learning Objective: – Yes, I met this objective

Sharing an Artifact: – Cross-Cultural Differences in Dealing with Workplace Conflict, From week 4, assignment 2. The task from this source addressed a difference encountered in cross-cultural communications and workplace conflicts. The idea obtained from this reading is that disagreements often happen in people’s daily lives, something I agreed with. When that happens, how people respond to situations is different. Although there might be variations in cultures, there are points of intersection at which people reach a mutual understanding.

Artifact Analysis: – The artifact comes from an assignment done in week 4. At the end of the course, I think it is true that the chances of conflict between people who differ in cultural practices are high. The most probable reason for the emergence of conflict is due to differences in values. Usually, we hold on to different values that might not matters to other people, although we expect them to resect anyway. When this fails to happen, then misunderstandings occur. In relation to the course objective, coming to a mutual ground through understanding helps ease or prevent the escalation of conflicts. I have learned that to avoid the violence of misunderstandings in place of work; it is better to consider mutual benefits like respecting what other people value as they do the same.

Connection to change: – In relation to change, learning how to respect people’s values, traditions, norms, or practices is the landmark of good relationships. In my work life, I will avoid conflict by showing respect and create a culture that acknowledges people’s differences. As a leader, change is related to this objective through behavioral practices like embracing respect, ethics, etiquette to show understanding, have mutual benefits, and relate well with everyone. My capstone action project requires me to foster good collaboration and dialogue, which mark the basis of conflict management as related to the learning objective.

Reflection Five- Research and Articulate Contrasting Perspectives

Ranking the Course Learning Objective: – Yes, I met the objective

Sharing an Artifact: – week 4 assignment 2- Cross-Cultural Differences in Dealing with Workplace Conflict. Regarding the response given in this task, I provided a study summary that gave contrasting perspectives on the view of conflict management among different cultures. Some research work disclosed that while Chinese people prefer relational assistance from other parties during conflicts, western cultures consider emotional intervention.

Artifact Analysis: –   I enjoyed this research work because it gave insight into how different cultural groups approaches conflicts. I learned that, contrary to what people might expect about seeking interventions from third parties, there are individual groups that prefer emotional help. The artifact comes from an assignment on cross-cultural differences, and at the end of the course, I think this broadened my mind to acknowledge and understand where people come from. In that way, the approach to negotiation or conflict resolution should be tailored as per individuals’ backgrounds. The artifact connects with the objective by providing articulation of perspectives on how conflict can be approached.

Connection to change: – learning how to deal with people from different cultures present an opportunity to foster good relationships. I must modify my approach toward conflict management and learn to acknowledge people’s backgrounds in my work life. As a leader, the first change concerning the learning of the objective is helping followers appreciate each other’s values. The capstone action project has to meet effective collaboration and good dialogues that appreciate teammates in relation to learning objectives.
