Replies on gender issues and dealing with patients
Hello Ornela,
I have read your discussion, and you are making a lot of sense. You have tried to show the root of this issue of gender/sexual harassment despite not being involved in such situations. I strongly agree with you that many of these issues arise due to biasness or lack of acknowledgment of one’s nature. Nurses are professionals who are trained to interact with all types of patients in a presentable manner to avoid interfering with an individual’s emotions. Therefore, we should have the ability to bring every belief or biasness at a neutral level and respect the patients regardless of differences. On top of understanding the ethical ways to deal with patients, it is also important to establish strict policies to mitigate the occurrence of these issues.
Hello Cheryl,
Congratulations for sharing such good thoughts about this subject. I agree with you that nurses need to be the first agents to embrace change in dealing with patients. It is obvious we have to encounter people with differences, and this should not be a surprise to us. It would be very logical to keep our beliefs aside to serve the patients without any bias. High expectations on which patients we hope to encounter may bring discrimination and harassment to patients. Therefore, we have to realize what we required to do and ensure our patients are happy with the services offered.
