Research Paper Assignment Directions
OVERVIEW:
Your Research paper is chunked into 4 parts and divided among units 5, 7, 8
- 5.02 Choose a Topic: 25 points
- 7.01 Write a Research Paper Outline: 100 points
- 8.03 Final Paper 80 points
OR
- 7.06 PowerPoint 80 points
Topic:
- You may choose any topic of interest to you that you have not previously written about or researched for which academic research can be conducted.
- For example, you could research an event, a person, a movement, or a social condition. You’ll submit your topic to me for approval. Your topic should interest you and teach you something!
Timeline:
- Choose a topic and read about it!
- Submit Graded Assignment 5.02: Choose Your Topic.
- Take notes on your topic IN YOUR OWN WORDS. Keep track of where your information comes from. You will need to do in-text citations and a Works Cited page for your research paper.
- Submit: Assignment 7.01 Outline- This is the meat of your paper and will serve as your rough draft. You will use this outline for your final product whether you choose to write a final draft in a word document or final draft in a PowerPoint
- From your outline, draft your paper. Remember to include in-text citations!
- Use easybib.com or bibme.com to format your Works Cited.
- Submit: The paper or alternate assignment PowerPoint: Assignment 8.03 OR Assignment 7.06.
Length:
- 5-6 well-written paragraphs; 2-3 pages
- Use the OUTLINE to format your paragraphs and plan your paper
Requirements for the Paper:
- Use a formal tone: no slang, texting language, or personal pronouns like I, me, we, us, or you.
- Do not write sentences that begin with “I think” or “I feel.” Also, do not write “In this paper” or “I will tell you about…”
- Use only short quotations in the paper. Long quotes are only filler. The majority of the paper should be your own words!
- Properly cite sources with in-text citations and a Works Cited in MLA format.
- Format the paper so that it follows MLA guidelines.
- Avoid plagiarism: Use your own word choice and sentence structure.

Research Paper Outline
Title: Young Teens and Social Media
Introductory Paragraph:Teens have basically let social media take over their lives. Most teens have been so
to social media that they barely focus on school now days.
Hook: How would you feel if you were in a citation and a close teen came to you and told you social media was hurting them in a way.
Background:
Thesis Statement:Social media has raised the percentage of cyber bullying and low self esteemed teens,but has lowered the percentage of teens participating in school.Teens have become addicted to social media and with that they haven’t been getting the right social skills developments.
Supporting Paragraph 1: bullying on social media
Topic Sentence (TS): Teens who are bullied on social media have low self esteem.
Concrete Detail (CD): “Strangers, even friends, are able to hide behind the screen and say things they often wouldn’t be able to face-to-face.” www.northshore.org
Commentary (CM): Teens die everyday from suicide all because cyber bullying is so common
Concluding Sentence (CS): If we lower the rates of social median we can lower the rates of teen suicide !
Supporting Paragraph 2: Now a days less children are graduating and dropping out more than getting their diplomas.
Topic Sentence (TS): Teens communication skills are not developing properly, such as the way they talk and write things.
Concrete Detail (CD): “teenagers, between the ages of 12-17, report using text messages in their daily lives more than any other form of communication.” www.nybehavior.com
Commentary (CM): There’s no doubt that us teens aren’t getting the social skills we need to survive because everyone’s so stuck into their phones.
Concluding Sentence (CS): Lets just get all of the teens out on a island with no phones and see how many can make it!
Supporting Paragraph 3: Social media pulls children away from family events and actually keeps them from having fun.
Topic Sentence (TS): Young boys and girls seem to have become really addicted to social media.
Concrete Detail (CD): “social skills and interaction are attributes people need to succeed in life,It may be hard to see, but children build these skills as they grow up interacting with other children in face to face scenarios.”
Commentary (CM): Nothing is better or can replace face to face interaction in my opinion.
Concluding Sentence (CS):
Concluding Paragraph: With that being said social media has affected teens in so many ways from cyber bullying to not having the proper knowledge to learn.
Restatement of thesis: Teens of all ages have became so low on self esteem from bullying and social media just in general.They have dropped out of school from lack of knowledge and social skills
