RESPECT OF DIFFERENCES

Executive Summary

Respect for difference is a broad term that is used in the multiculturalism that defines how people value others socially, their culture, and individual identity. Respect for difference is likely seen to involve an attitude of a different kind and its public expression in a more sophisticated way. Respect for difference is often differentiated with toleration of disagreements because toleration of-of disagreements involve putting up with some cultural behaviors under given permission and no option is given while respect for differences in individuals’ decision to value other people’s culture and beliefs. Respect for difference involves a more general acceptance of the difference as a legitimate presence in public rather than a positive valuation of the difference in question. Respect for difference is ‘more’ than ‘mere’ toleration, not because it necessarily involves a positive assessment of the difference in question, but because it allows this difference to be expressed in public rather than only tolerated on the condition that it is confined to the private. (Balint, 2006)

Introduction:

Critical analysis relating to the respect of difference:

Respect for difference should have positive outcomes and positive duties to accommodate, recognize, protect and also offer support to the minorities in ways which primarily differs from liberal rights being distributed based on group membership and sometimes exercised by groups. Liberal rights are expressed as respect for dignity since every person is expected to have given set of equal rights to enjoy. They are also required to do as others do because they are human beings, and thus respect for differences is based on group differences between individuals. Respect for differences also explains the connection an individual is subjected to in terms of those at the same level, those higher or lower than them. It defines how people relate to others, legally and socially. It is associated with the attitude with which one can tell the level of respect to give. For a lousy mood, one is likely to show no connection, but with the right view, a high degree of compliance can be experienced. (Darwall, 2006)

Relating to the community:

With the differences in cultures and values, there is how differences are respected, which include, being friendly and courteous to others by greeting people, talking with them, and talking about them later. Making a book about similarities and differences between other people and you, valuing difference, making new friends, using empathy when dealing with others, treating others with kindness, and believing everyone is unique.

Community is a group of people that are brought together by a given need, goal, objective, or same interests. There are different types of communities which include coalition, collaboration, and multiculturalism collaboration. Coalition community involves two or more organizations that have come together to find a solution to a given issue or with same related problems they cannot solve individually. This community aims to speed the answer to the subject by combining resources since the problem cannot be solved by one group on its own. Once the problem is solved the group breaks, and each organization goes on its own. The diversity of this community is the problem as well as the strength each offer.it requires a moderate level of commitment. (S, 2013)

The other community is collaboration; it involves two or more organizations working together on many issues and objectives in a long-term commitment. It requires relationships which are formal since it deals with a wide range of problems. The community is responsible for setting policy and sharing resources. It is diversified by a strong sense of trust, valuing their differences and mutual respect between them. The last community is multiculturalism collaboration, which is formed by two or more groups or organizations made up of members from different setting and cultural backgrounds, with aims or objectives targeting the populations with different cultures. The cultural differences among the organization include racial attitudes, values, languages, traditions, history, sense of self, and ethnic heritage. Learning is one of the significant factors in our world. Values sometimes conflict because people don’t understand each other due to their differences. Multiculturalism collaboration focuses on the shared decision, defined roles, common goal, and setting timelines within which the organizations involved work. Multiculturalism collaboration is essential because it creates an active community, it improves justice in the society, it gives knowledge of other’s culture, it promotes effective communication, it encourages common interests more than the differences, and finally it provides equal rights to everyone. (Anner, 1995, June/ July)

Challenges that arise:

There are some challenges associated with communities which are miscommunication due to different languages, misunderstanding as they belong to different ethnicity, lack of cooperation since they have no common interest, lack of trust due to their short-term relationship and lack of common beliefs as their beliefs vary. A problem of poor leadership can also face the community as every group tends to choose their leader despite having or not having the skills of a leader. Disagreements can also encounter them as they have different values and norms. It is also challenging to grow economically as a community as a very individual has their own opinion regarding others.

The role and responsibilities of being an ethical professional when working with diverse communities;

An ethical professional has roles and responsibilities when working in a diverse community. The tasks associated with them are; confident which involves surety in their doings, socializing with others, making peaceful decision, showing others gratitude, respecting everyone, uniting those involved, dividing duties among workers,creating an ethical working environment, fair treatment among workers, dealing with unethical issues, acting with integrity and being accountable. There are also responsibilities they have should be transparent, trustworthy, they should be innovative and creative, should have good leadership skill, be good role models, should be humble, should encourage teamwork, should be corrupt free, should be fair and just, should be competent, should respect all culture, should be diversified, should maintain peace and liberty and should also be self-driven.

Value of self-reflection in personal and professional life;

Self-reflection is careful thought about one’s own beliefs, attitudes, values, and behavior. It can also be a careful thought to a change we have gone through, an experience and an event learned. Self-reflection involves a series of step which is initiated by picking the subject to reflect on whether based on personal life, career, health, or finances. Secondly set out time when you will be without distractions. Thirdly outline the questions you want to find out. The fourth step is getting answers to every question you had. The fifth step is being true to yourself. The sixth step is analyzing the actions to take to start, continue, or stop doing something, and the last step is celebrating your success. Self-reflection has some benefits which include strengthening emotional intelligence, working with integrity, and being more confident. (Kovary, 2015, December)

Recognizing & Respecting Difference

Increasing emotional intelligence is brought about when one thinks inwardly. Two components make emotional intelligence, self-regulation, and self-awareness. Self-regulation is the ability to control your impulses and emotions to fit in the fluctuating situations. Self-awareness provides the knowledge to understand your strengths, weaknesses, passions, values, goals, and drives and recognize their influence on others. Creating these skills will improve both your personal life and professional role as a leader. Working with integrity is another benefit of self-reflection. It is developed when one is honest with its core values; it will lead to better decisions and strengthened integrity. Having time to review past and recent vital actions and decisions and evaluating them against your core values is the key to acting with integrity. It can make your decision-making process in the future more relaxed, and your costs solidified when done consistently. The last benefit is being more confident. Reflecting on your strengths and knowing how you can build on them makes you very sure in the future. Confidence helps I decision making, effective communication, and it influences building. We are optimistic when we close the gaps in our weak areas and know where our strengths lie. (Kovary, 2015, December)
