Response Argument
I agree with your argument concerning the historical events social trends of the place and time of bicycle thieves. In relation, you identify that the period had overseen the downfall of Italy’s economy, which further affected the lifestyle of Italian citizens. In particular, the country witnessed high unemployment rates related to a decline in job opportunities which also promoted poverty among the citizens upon which they would struggle to ensure survival under the oppressive regime. The aspect is adequately presented through the desperation developed among the citizens who adopt stealing as a way to provide for their families. The film further outlines the struggles related to the adverse economic through the affliction of Antonio, whose bicycle gets stolen. In consideration, Antonio could not afford to buy another bike despite it being essential to meeting his job demands. In return, Antonio tries to steal another bicycle upon which he gets caught. In this regard, the filmmakers present the affliction of the common man under Mussolini’s oppressive government.
