Rogerian Argument
The article School Dress Code and Uniform Policies written by Anderson Wendell was published the year 2002. This article talks about the need for standard dress codes in school, citing advantages to why students should have standards dress codes and also some disadvantages of the same to both students and the parents as well as the community at large. Anderson has indicated the repercussions on the use of standard dress codes more so to the parents in those families who cannot afford the uniforms as the initial costs are so high for the purchase of the uniforms. In this article, Anderson states in his findings that standard dress code is a disadvantage in that students will all look the same. Also, it may contribute to rebellious, causing problems of noncompliance.
The advantages of having a standard dress code outweighed the disadvantages as standard dress codes from the findings indicate that it enhances students’ performance as students feel more secure when in uniform and free from threats of violence. It can naturally lead to better performances. Also, students in uniform mostly focus on school work, and this will lead to better performances. Dress codes symbolize dressing for success, which is noticed not only in offices but also in classrooms. Anderson’s article also shows that most families get it as an advantage while buying school codes as it costs less compared to these other latest fashions of clothes hence talking it a relief for them.
The article “Dressing Diversity: Politics of difference and the case of school uniforms” by Samantha Deane of the Loyalo University of Chicago, states otherwise. It indicated that the implementation of school uniforms could minimize disruptive behavior, lead to respectful promotion within oneself, building of school unity, and help maintain high school performance. Most of the school uniform originates for students to improve their behaviors and succeed academically.
These school uniform policies neutralize students and remove any spaces for the actual conversations. In the article, Fraser quoted that school uniform policies by all logic are to perform attempts to organize students. With the two articles, both the School Dress Code and Uniform Policies and Dressing Diversity show that school uniforms are of advantage to the students, the parents, and the school itself. Both articles formulated that standard dress codes help improve performance and increase students’ degree of behavior. Standard dress codes in schools should be encouraged because the primary purpose of schooling is to gain knowledge through performing well in school. The behavior of a student is also the main reason for schooling. With dress code, many students learn from it and take it in as input hence commendable behaviors of the students.
