ROLE OF LEADERSHIP IN CHANGE MANAGEMENT IN HEALTHCARE
Leadership styles and participation are the determinants of a successful change process. The thesis statement: Transformational leadership and situational approach are effective in successful change implementation and coordination.

Leadership in change management requires creating new systems and instituting new approaches. The article states that transformational leadership is concerned with the capabilities required to effectively effect change. The authors describe leadership as an essential component in the successful implementation of change. Eisenbach, Watson, & Pillai concluded that combining a transformational and transactional approach will ensure staff engagement, motivation, and satisfaction for the patient, provider, and organization. The content of the article addresses the topic and is significant in my research as it directly contributes to the topic. The research is based on the role of transformational leadership in effective change which corresponds with my thesis statement.

Page draws from her research that transformational leadership engaged leaders and followers in a dependent relationship and unites the team in pursuit of organizational goals. Creating a conducive work environment for nurses requires a fundamental change in health care organizations (HCOs). The change requires leadership that can transform the HCO as a whole. Transformational leadership and evidence-based management are essential in improving patient safety and it involves is based on understanding followers’ needs, wants, and concerns through effective communication. She stated that exercising leadership is associated with increased job satisfaction, productivity, and commitment among the staff which enhances the successful implementation of change. The article is precise, concise, and addresses the topic adequately. The article is significant as it states the qualities of transformational leaders, and how it contributes to the attainment of organizational goals.

Xu outlines that nurse leaders should have an adept understanding of the leadership styles to develop effective skills to improve relationships while attaining the goals of the organization. She concludes that different leadership styles are needed for different situations, and an appropriate approach should be adopted to meet the goals. In the healthcare setting, several aspects are changing such as customer expectations, financial needs, the demand for care and patient-centered care, and the need for patient safety which demands effective leadership. Transformational leadership is effective in the change process because leaders and followers motivate each other resulting in system congruence. Transformational leaders have a strong vision and personality traits. Transformation leadership theory is focused on change which makes this article significant in my research. It outlines the role of transformational leadership in effecting organizational change. The article is relevant in that clear and appropriately addresses the research topic.
