Saving as a priority for all medical practitioners

When a person is faced with different situations at his or her disposal, practical reasoning comes in place which determines and defines the measures a person takes to face the two positions. The study of practical sense is what is referred to as ethics. Most of the time the troubles that face a person are dilemmas which require a critical thought that would ensure the most effective decision is made which means the sacrificial or forgone situation has less impact than the chosen one. Nurses, while on their duty, often they are faced with ethical dilemmas. The perception of ethics is different from one person to the other. For instance, what is perceived as ethical by one person could be considered to be unethical by another person with a different point of view on the matter at hand.

In the case study found in the text by McGonigle and Mastrian, a nurse is faced with an ethical dilemma. The nurse gets an emergency in the Medical-surgical unit while at the same time, she expects an instructor from a University to develop her assignment. The nurse amid many decisions at her disposal, she chooses to give the professor her password, which would allow him to access her electronic medical record. Postponing the meeting with the instructor could have been another solution to the dilemma which is different from what she did and the suggestions provided.

If the nurse postpones her appointment with the instructor to a later date, she will avoid giving her password to him, which will ensure that the institution’s policies are not violated. However, it would interfere with the instructor’s schedule while at the same time will safeguard her grading since postponing will give her a chance to have an appointment in future. Allowing another person to do it on her behalf, as stated may not be appropriate. The decision safeguards three aspects which include her grade, the institution’s policy on sharing of patient’s information and the patient’s in need for medical attention and only interferes with the instructor’s schedule. While looking at this option, it is three advantages against one, and therefore it is a practical option different from the one given. The long-term solution is that the institution should allow the nurses to have two systems, one with regulated access for the instructor and the other with unlimited access to the nurse.

In conclusion, saving should be a priority for all medical practitioners. The nurse’s option to attend to the patient in the emergence was a necessary priority.
