The course has equipped me with a lot of information concerning advocacy and disability rights. I have realized disability advocate can imply to diverse things in accordance with the type of advocacy that one is alluding to. Through the knowledge attained from the course, it’s easy to note that two types of advocacy touches of legal and social advocacy. Another important information from the course is that legal disability involves advocacy from professionals whose aim is to litigate for disability rights for the disability people. In contrast, social advocacy focus is directed towards social change as well as public policy. The course has equipped with skills of identifying issues affecting the society and identify the best strategy to apply and handle them. As far as professional perspective is concerned, I have managed to realize that advocacy is crucial in the workplace to ensure that the well being of people with disabilities is catered according to the set laws.
Section 2
The issue of involuntary servitude is a controversial issue that seems to relate to the issue of coronavirus crisis. This considering the fact that the government has been forced by situations to limit certain human rights, especially on movement as a way of dealing with the pandemic. It’s clear that for many past centuries those people with disabilities ended up being routinely placed within institutions run by the state. Many residents were needed to keep the institutions running in an efficient way and were required to work within the institution in various positions. Despondently, this involuntary servitude preserved the institutional system that ensured that persons with disabilities separated from the community and at risk of abuse. This approach offered certain residents with the skills required to leave the institutions and work in the community, and it’s only a small number of people allowed due to the fact that developmental disabilities were not well-thought-out to have the capacity of living independently. These are some of the issues that people with disabilities are facing today, considering that their rights have been violated for a long time.
