Service project
The service project that I chose involved studying two TEDs, which are named: ‘A Radical Plan to End Plastic Waste’ by Andrew Forrest and ‘The Best Way to Help is Often Listen’ by Sophie Andrews. These two concepts are worth spreading as they are some of the significant challenges that affect the modern population. Andrew Forrest indicates that plastic is an incredible yet adverse material (Forrest, 2019). He suggests a plausible way of getting the world’s biggest firms to contribute to the conservation of the environment. Sophie Andrews gives a personal and robust discussion, where she proposes the mere act of listening instead of talking, which is mostly the best way to help people who are in need(Andrews, 2019). The two talks were very educational as I learned that the world’s industries make plastics through recycling instead of fossils. I also learned the strength that comes with human connection and how listening to someone’s needs without judging them could save or transform them.
This project service relates to the course content as it focuses on the skill of problem-solving in the sense that it gives a plan for industries to get involved in environmental conservation by using recycled plastics instead of using plastics from fossil fuels. Listening to others is also part of problem-solving. This experience has specifically empowered me with a critical takeaway of paying attention with compassion and without prejudice when someone in need is talking. Another primary takeaway from this service project is that plastic waste can come to an end if some of the world’s influential companies focus on getting all their plastics from recycled products instead of fossil fuels. This experience additionally relates to my role as a change-maker as it has equipped with some modes of problem-solving, which is a crucial factor in the change-making process.
