Serving the council’s decision is serving the public good.
I serve in the council and at times we find our ideas differ from the public good. But I have to admit that serving the councils decision is serving the public good. The council recommended approval of the proposed facility. First, we have to accept Fair Housing Laws also apply to the Residential Care facilities. We should not break the law in favor of few who don’t want the facility to be build in our area. I do see your concerns but look at the big picture as shown in the next paragraph.
By doing so we are ensuring access for everyone to have a roof over their heads. We should not stereotype people based on their age, race or religion. We should accommodate people, lets welcome people with diverse ideologies and that will make a difference as a community. By allowing the Residential care facility, the area also gets developed as they will invest their resources in community.
Discuss the challenges that might occur if someone did choose to implement the policy
If I were the city manager, I would have been glad to implement the policy. But that also has its own challenges. You might find the neighborhood segregating from the residential care facility. This is brought by the disparities in their economic level. This house segregation affect their quality of life, say like access to a decent healthcare, good jobs within the community, access to transport and even access to good schools. Also, where people with disabilities live, there must be good structures for their easy access in their buildings. People who live in the residential care facilities should be protected by the fair housing act at all times.
The concerns of the residents about the set up of the residential care facility is also a challenge. They have to develop a welcoming spirit to the vulnerable and that will work both ways since every social class will appreciate each other.
