Should Assisted Suicide Be Legal?
Before addressing the concept of legalization of assisted suicide, we should take time to think about why individuals in their right mind would terminate their life. We should also question what we live for and what the major point of life is. Many philosophers, writers, and scientists have been trying for many years to address these questions. However, I believe that all of you would agree that the major sense of life is to be happy. Therefore, assisted suicide should be legalized.
Many people reach a point when life becomes meaningless to the point that they live waiting for their death. Happiness is a unique concept that has a different meaning in every individual’s life. However, I believe we all have common indications of life’s meaning, which include well-paid jobs, mutual love, family, and good health. However, no individual will include painless life to the category until they are faced with it.
According to statistics, almost 1500 individuals lose their lives daily as a result of cancer. There is no doubt that certain types or stages of cancer are curable, and thereby not every cancer patient is doomed to die. However, the fact is that not a great number of cancer patients get an opportunity to survive the disease. As much as they will be receiving treatment and have their hopes high, they will eventually have to die sooner or later. The essence of assisted suicide comes in at this point as it gives these individuals a chance to die with their eyes open and dignity.
Have you thought about who is terminally ill? The paralyzed who lacks an opportunity to engage in various activities that makes their lives enjoyable? Is there any happiness experience with being bedridden and considering oneself as a burden to the others? What is the essence of allowing an individual to live when they have lost a chance to live due to serious illness or severe trauma?
Please take a moment to imagine a twenty-year individual who cannot move part of their bodies, but only a few fingers and they endure constant pains. These individuals will lack a chance to run the marathon, have a beautiful relationship, and have a family, but they will also never have the slightest chance to try out. Throughout their lives, these individuals will never ignore their disability and pain. These individuals can suffer till death, being a burden to the loved ones and taking control over their lives once.
In conclusion, there is no point in seeing an individual suffer to death when there is an option to relieve them of their pain and allow them a peaceful death. There is no important choice for individuals to make as those involving matters of death and life. Therefore, every individual should have a right to free themselves from the weary and meaningless existence full of emotional and physical suffering. I know we all wish that we will never experience such dilemmas in our lives, but in case we do, then we should prefer having the chance to make a choice.
