Significance of Data Mining
Data mining is the extraction of useful patterns from data sources, such as databases, texts, and the web that uses statistical and design matching techniques. Its concern is noisy data, missing values, statistic data, sparse data, algorithm efficiency, size, and data complexity. It has become a popular tool for analyzing large datasets (Chamatkar & Butey, 2014). It helps the analysts recognize significant facts, relationships, patterns, trends, and exceptions that might go unnoticed.
In Data Mining, data sets will be explored to yield hidden and unknown predictions that can be used in the future for efficient decision making. Data Mining involves pattern recognition, mathematical and statistical techniques to search for data , and help the analyst recognize significant trends, facts, relationships, and anomalies. For businesses, data mining helps make better business decisions by discovering patterns and relationships in the data. It helps spot sales trends, develops smarter marketing campaigns, and accurately predict customer loyalty.
Many classic data mining techniques are generally useful in crime analysis, such as association rule mining, classification, and clustering (Kuk et al., 2015). Preprocessing data has been used to keep the data set ready for the process. Entity extraction has been used to identify person, address, vehicle automatically, and personal properties from police narrative report. Clustering techniques have been used to cluster the city crime data mining depends on the crimes. The classification has been used to detect criminal data from the city crime database. Finally, Social network analysis has been used to analyze criminals’ roles and associations among criminal network entities.
