Social Deviance
Negative deviance refers to a person’s behavior, or action falls below the expectations of the society. I witnessed my fellow employee coming late for two consecutive weeks. This action falls under formal deviance, i.e., actions violating social norms such as formally enacted rules. Formal social controls may include polices, rules, laws, and regulations. The social norm violated is workplace rules and professional behavior. Workplace rules are set to guide the behaviors of the employees and ensure their actions are professional. Some of the causes of her behavior are strict employer, anger, and low payment. My reaction to this employee was a negative response to her petty behavior.
Her behavior could result in to decrease in production, reduced teamwork, and lack of commitment. Some employees responded that this employee should leave the company. Others commented that
might be this employee was going through a lot of things that needed full control of the house and may others. This employee should have discussed with the employer about the reasons she reported a week for two consecutive days. A functionalist may refer to this behavior as an occupational crime. Functionalism may favour this employees since it has the idea that financial goals and work goals are not the only goals in life. This employee acted solely in her personal interest, thus breaking the trust of other workmates. Conflict theorists will have greater use since it will help understand the relationship between power and social class. In this case, the employee had a rank as the assistant manager, thus used this position to fail some simple basic rules such as areporting early according to the schedule.
