Social engineering
In the current world that is occasioned with increased technological innovation and inventions, the issue of social engineering whereby people manipulate others to give up confidential information has become common. My friend John fell a victim of this, an aspect that led to the defrauding of his bank account. What happened, in this case, is that he received a strange call with the callers purporting to be bank officials.
The social engineering targeting John aimed at getting some information from him such as the card number, account number of the bank and the security code, which is usually written on the backside of the card. After this, the callers told him that they wanted to ensure that his account is secure, not knowing that they wanted to con him his money. After the first call, they promised to give him a call after a short while.
During this time between the first call, and now the second call, the callers were tampering with the system by feeding all the data that they had collected. On doing so, they reached a point where they could not do any transaction without a code that was sent to John’s phone. Again, not suspecting that those guys were fraudsters, John sent them the code upon their request. Within no time, he got another message that his account had been debited some cash. This is how the story of John’s social engineering was.
