Social Networks

Introduction

From the book, Introduction to Computer Literacy by Kershner (1989), my chosen topic of consideration is Chapter 7, which addresses social network. Generally, social network implies the applications or internet sites that enable individuals of same interest to communicate as one and share various aspects like videos, photos and texts. Currently, the most identified social networks include, Twitter, WhatsApp, Facebook, Google +, Instagram, among others. In other words, these sites make the world become like a global village, whereby information sharing from one place to the other happens in the shortest time possible. Therefore, ideas from the course book concerning social network contain particular similarities and differences with other sources detailed by qualified authors on the same field.

Summary of Points made by the Authors

Chapter 7 of the course book, social networks details information on how social networks are being applied, Web 2.0. Additionally, Web 2.0 people have the ability to share with online societies at anytime and anywhere. Correspondingly, the author confirms that Web 2.0 technology, does not only allow only reading, but individuals within the social networks have the ability to write also. This implies that an individual can now read an article and then make comments concerning their reflection on the text. There are different forms of networks, these include, friends and families. The other category of individuals one can share with information are the associates and colleagues. The world currently has various forms of social networks, as detailed in the introduction, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, among others.

The second article used has the title, “Social Network on the Internet” by Musial and Kazienko (2013). Therefore, based on the authors, the fast progression and enlargement of the internet and social-founded activities entailed by the Web 2.0 concept incite the creation of fresh regions of research for instance the social networks present in internets identified as the online communities. Moreover, the authors affirms that social networks can be upheld or obtained directly by social networking websites for instance Facebook, among others. Also, these sites can also be obtained indirectly through data extraction concerning user interaction, achievements and activities from sites like blogs, chats, emails that are linked by the hyperlinks. The authors also position that social networks are sets of “human beings or rather digital representations” since they signify registered operators associated by relations obtained from the information concerning their actions, common communication or express relations obtained in the internet-founded schemes.

Moreover, Musial and Kazienko (2013) state that digital representations identified and their relations are branded in various means. Such variety produces a detailed and a clear opinion on the idea of internet founded social networks. This article also details extensively the classification of social networks. Correspondingly, this article is divided into different sections, with each part tackling different aspects of social networks. Specifically, the first part describes the meaning of social network. Based on this article, social networks entails the internet site that allows close human interaction by supporting different communication concepts like videos, and texts. Section two differentiates social network to interactions in the real world.

The third article used is written by Young (2011), “Social Ties, Social Networks and Facebook Experience.” To begin with, this article indicates the outcomes of the survey examining how cross-generations apply Facebook in their daily life interactions. Based on this article, the author positions social network as the structure created by people possessing a common attributes, for instance, friendship, ideas, experiences, beliefs and interests. Young (2011) also positions that Facebook application has been applied throughout the globe through various means for instance, “face talking”. The author also positions that face talking implies the act of reviewing the other individual without being physically present to have the face to face communication. Therefore, Young (2011) also agrees that Facebook is now developing into a virtual globe of reality. This is important to individuals who have various friends having friends in far regions. Young (2011) states that Facebook also has enhanced close interaction of families who are far from each other. The author confirms that from the outcomes of the survey, the acceptance of face talking is also depicted with 67 percent of survey respondents in the study positioning that their application of online social network is to enable them keep track of other’s achievements and their own.

Thoughtful Analysis of Points made by the Authors 300

The first source mainly talks about the concept of Web 2.0. Therefore, Web 2.0 entails those websites that concentrate on user-produced content, ease of application, participating belief and interoperability for end respondents. Therefore, I understand that this term enables the participants to effectively interact with each other via social media interchange as makers of user-generated gratified in cybernetic community. Additionally, this differs from Web 1.0 age where people were not able to view various contents in a passive way. Thus, from this notion, the point detailed by the course book is Web 2.0 which led to increased human social interactions across the globe.

Correspondingly, after reading the second article, my thought is that the authors were addressing the concept of the importance of social networks on the today’s world. This is stated when the author positions that due to overgrowing fame of social computing, social networks have appeared to be one of the most interesting fields to study in computer science. Also, from the source, social computing entails actions for instance, accessing, computing, processing and visualizing every kind of social information. Likewise, the other idea from the article is the classification of social networks on the internet, which have usually survived in the global communication medium. The authors also position that in the contemporary society, social networks are simply extracted, usually similarly from publicly available information.

The last article mainly addresses one of the social networks sites, Facebook. Therefore, from this article, the authors indicate the importance of Facebook in the contemporary society. Also, based on this article, the authors address the concept of face talking, whereby people are now able to view others’ profiles and having close communication without having to physically be available.

Similarities and Differences of the Authors

There are various means at which the three articles are related. And to begin with, the articles have the same meaning of social networks, which denotes internet sites in which individuals are able to share information. Also, the articles address the concept of Web 2.0 idea. Specifically, the first article positions due to Web 2.0 idea, social networking has effectively progressed thereby enabling a more interaction approach. Web 2.0 also differs with Web 1.0 which does not support other additional features that assist in a more detailed approach. Therefore, these articles position that Web 2.0 idea has advanced social networking.

Additionally, all the sources that I have used have examples of social network sites. The most used is Facebook, which is one of the most common social networks. Also, the articles have also detailed WhatsApp, LinkedIn and email. All these sites are used globally to enhance social networks.

Reflection

Based on the above sources, social network has been improved across the globe. And, lots of improvements are still occurring to these platforms. Also, from these sources, I am able to comprehend that having social network have the ability to help individuals link up with relatives and families or to have a view of how activities are progressing in other regions across the world. Therefore, I picked to examine social networking since it indicates how the society is currently digital for interactions. Majority of the people apply social network for the purpose of following someone’s even if they are not physically present.

With the current communication advancements, social networking will soon be the face of the world. This is also seen whereby various businesses rely on social networks to keep track on their customers. One can easily apply Facebook, WhatsApp, Twitter and LinkedIn. Therefore, based on the Web 2.0 idea, one can easily have an inclusive conversation with each other despite any geographical system. Likewise, based on information on “Social Ties, Social Network and Facebook”, the author positioned that “a wall post serves as an affectionate ‘thinking of you’. This implies that social networks always create a close relationship among individuals. Ease of communication also indicates convenience of Web 2.0 application.

Conclusion

With all these three sources, social networks have notable benefits to the society. Firstly, by making organizations more promoted through Facebook. Through the text book, it indicates that technology can advance all through the world using Twitter, Facebook and others social networks. Web 2.0 has also enabled effective communication among these sites by supporting various features. Social network is currently turning into a primary communication means across the globe.
