Sociological perspectives
George Floyds case can be approached from a functional perspective. According to Durkheim, for instance, the society is made up of complex systems which are interrelated and interdependent in aim of working together to maintain stability. In this case, the policeman who murdered George Floyd did so in pursuit of a social harmony with thoughts that Floyd was an element causing an imbalance in the society. Durkheim further speculates that elements such as social facts, laws, religious beliefs, and customs must be adhered so as to govern the social life. Here, the police officer felt that suppressing Floyd was a move to attain governance in the social life.
Conflict Analysis is the other theory relating to George Floyd’s case. According to Karl Marx, the society is made up of have’s and the have not’s, and that the have’s will engage all efforts to suppress the have not’s. They can thus do anything to ensure that they remain dominant in the society. George Floyd is among the minority groups in the American society and the Natives have been engaging all efforts to suppress African-Americans. His death was thus a move by the superior group to suppress them as racially disadvantaged.
Lastly, the Symbolic Interaction Analysis by Goffman et al. is applicable in Floyd’s case because the killers are pretenders in the normal social life, but once they get a backdoor chance, the real self will come out (Henslin 47). It is a dangerous phenomenon because while they are normally socializing, the Natives are a representation of a leopard in a sheep’s skin just to turn against the Blacks indefinitely. The Caucasian environment is thus not a safe place for African Americans.
Conclusion
This paper has speculated Goffman’s dramaturgical perspective where it was found that most people tend to fake their real identify in a social platform just to fit in, but restore to default when with those who they are familiar with. It has also explored there sociological concepts of symbolic internationalism, conflict analysis, and functional analysis in reference to George Floyd’s case.
