The Problem to be Solved
As my graduation day draws near, my fear is the lack of a guaranteed professional job after my graduation. This is a major issue for me because I have personal ambitions and goals that I want to achieve in my career. Therefore, it is a brilliant idea to begun taking the necessary actions now tailored towards creating practical solutions to my problem.
Details of the Problem
The dream of every student is to land the job of their dreams in their respective professions upon graduating from college or the University. However, the sad reality is that there are limited opportunities in the job market as well as stiff competition in the existing job market. One of the challenging issue for fresh graduates is the lack of field experience in their profession, which is a common requirement by most employers in today’s job market. Besides, research indicates that most graduates lack the job skills and the work ethics that can qualify them to be hired. The research further indicates that a majority of the employers in the current job market perceive the millennial graduates as lacking the basic life skills that are needed in the running activities of organizations (Steed). Therefore, I need to work on developing and improving desirable attributes of a prospective employee for the current job market to solve my problem.
Objective
The first objective in solving my problem is to seek knowledge on the current and future dynamics of the job market by conducting extensive research. In addition, after understanding the perceptions of employers on the millennial graduates, my objective is to work on developing life skills and the work ethics required of an employee in the current job market. Since most of the organizations have a requirement that each prospective employee should have a given threshold of experience in the respective profession, I will plan to engage in voluntary activities and do part-time jobs that will equip me with the necessary skills to conquer the job market. Besides, having prior work experience as well as excellent life skills and work ethics will enable me to create a versatile resume that will boost my chances of getting a job. My other objective is to exploit any opportunity to build a network with people that are established in my profession such as organizational leaders and lecturers.
Build the Case
The reason why I choose to work on the objectives that I mentioned above is that I will be able to improve myself at a personal level as well as boost my chances of securing a job after graduation. Besides, we live in a competitive world, which implies that working on improving myself now will give me a competitive edge when looking for a job upon graduation.
Define the Shortfall
Currently, I lack the work experience and skills needed in the job market. In addition, I need to work on improving various aspects of my life skills such as communication, teamwork, and desirable work ethics needed in the job market.
Causes of Shortfall
Being an introvert, I rarely talk much with people, which means that I have to work on improving social interactions with people. Besides, I have no social networks because I rarely attend seminars, conferences and workshops relevant to my field.
Define actions that bridge the shortfall
To bridge the shortfall, I will improve my social interactions by talking more to my peers and lecturers. In addition, I will find a part-time job to gain works skills. I will forge networks by finding time to participate in seminars and conferences relevant to my field.
Evaluate the Proposed Actions
The proposed actions are achievable goals that require my commitment. For instance, when working to improve my social skills, I can use the services of the guidance and counselling department of our school. I will also be looking for part-time job adverts in my locality to gain the practical work skills.
Create an Execution Plan
My execution plan will involve being aggressive in looking for the part-time job, visiting the counsellor for advise on social skills, and participating in academic and organizational functions to build professional networks.
Risk Analysis
The major risk involved in my plan is the difficulty of finding a part-time job with no prior experience for jobs.
Formal Decision
My decision is to ensure that I will do all that it takes to achieve all the set objectives in boosting my odds of getting a job after graduation. This would mean volunteering for jobs and activities that will give me hands-on experience for my future career.
