Song Comparison

The song that I have selected from Spotify titled ” the drowned girl” by David Bowie (Bowie, 1982). And for the comparison that I liked is “Lover Man” by Sarah Vaughan (Vaughan, 1945). I have selected these songs because I think the theme or message that these songs want to convey is the same at much extent. Both vocalists perform songs with high sounds, and there are considerable variations in tones from start to end. The song by David Bowie is full of motivations, and each word of his song is prominent. He was talking about the drowned girl and comparing the girl with the sky. Every word of the vocalist turned from high timber to low timber. These voices can be differentiated easily. At some point, the voice turned smooth, and at times, it becomes harsh and intense. These variations in vocal timbers differentiate between what needs focus. Through his words, that includes a feature description of the girl tries to grab the interest of listeners.

While the second song, comparative to the first one, is ” Lover Man.” The lyrics of this song were much intense, slow, and depressive because the singer had portrayed her sadness into her words. Timber variations of the song are also high and low at some points. Sarah Vaughan portrays real sadness song and striving for Love Mann, who can vanish all her pain and come to make love with her. I chose to compare with this song because both songs’ grief and intense background are the same. The vocalist wanted words and unique tone variations to convey her pain to listeners. I felt there are few points in the song on which the vocalist points more stress and strengthens her position. She relates numerous fiction and real things such as the moon to make sense and to make her pain real. Vocal timbers of into the song like the first one vary, but in this song, most of the lines are smoothly presented for the audience. The quality of the tone is highlighted because of the varying degree of overtones and sound waves.
