SOURCES OF POWER
Individuals have different perspectives of power some vie it as the overall tool in administration while others view it as a tool to possess anything at your reach. However, power is the capability to influence or affect the behavior of others or an event. How leaders behave during a negotiation it impacts the outcome of the process. Unused power it has no value to those being subjected to it. A negotiator needs to be careful when using power in negotiation to avoid using it the wrong way. The mediator needs to understand the purpose of power during negotiation. Power is important in helping the mediator to represent both parties’ interests. There are four sources of power that a mediator would use during negotiation these include reverent, positional, reward, and expert. Positional power is authority acquired by the position that he holds in and the organization’s hierarchy and structure. One can influence events and individuals without official authority. When a leader can inspire and influence his followers to do what he tells them is referred to as Reverent power (Alapo, 2018). A leader is characterized by a strong personal connection with other individuals.
Reward power involves individuals using rewards to influence and inspire the behavior of others while Expert power involves the use of high-level knowledge and skills to influence how people behave (Norbom & Lopez, 2016). Mark Zuckerberg is an individual whose source of power is Expert power since he has that knowledge to influence other individuals working for him. He founded Facebook and today is among the most powerful individuals in the world. Mike Pence is the vice president of the USA and the source of power is positional since he wields power from the position he has been placed in the government. Warren buffet is a leader who believes in rewarding her employees as the best strategy of motivating and influencing them to work hard. Will Smith is also an individual whose source of power is Reverent. Many people are so interested in what he does and are always following his life. He inspires many people with his speeches. Mediators should be aware of the different sources of power and use power in providing solutions to the problems existing between the two parties.
