Nevertheless, she struggles to comb the hair, resolving to endure every challenge that comes along. On the other hand, the author of the second essay describes his experiences in learning how to swim in an unbroken chain. He is initially hesitant about learning and struggles in his first classes. Through careful coaching, he gets confident in swimming with a rope on his waist even when the rope is finally let go and likens this to a person’s transition to adulthood.
Both of these essays derive profound life lessons applicable to a person’s life. As the first persona tries to comb through the curled hair, so does every person struggle to find meaning in the tied-up life. Every success in life is then met with a new set of difficulties until one decides to struggle right on and face the harsh life. Achieving freedom in life comes upon the cognition that there is no single inoculation to solve all life problems. The second essay demonstrates the need for confidence and taking risks without looking back. Learning to swim symbolizes learning to live by overcoming fears and gaining confidence. Although the transition is always hard, catapulting oneself with confidence garnered from previous experiences will ultimately translate into success.
The second essay is the most interesting to read of the two. The analogy chosen by the author is practical, describing the step by step process of learning how to swim. The choice of words appeals to the audience’s imagination efficiently. It is easy to figure out the life experience the author is symbolizing by reading through the well-structured essay. Although the first essay is equally impressive, the author utilizes a less practical analogy of combing through webbed hair. The author also does not appeal to the audience’s imagination as adequately as is the case in the second essay.
