Native Americans and Asian Americans often have cultural beliefs and practices that are different from European Americans. It is critical for counselors to learn as much as possible about these cultures and develop degree skills to work effectively with individuals from these cultures. According to the ACA Code of Ethics, multicultural competence is defined as a capacity whereby counselors possess cultural and diversity awareness and knowledge about themselves and others, and how this awareness and knowledge are applied effectively in practice with clients and client groups.
