Summaries and a Critical Response
- Summaries
The article by Nall (2018) discusses various benefits of sunlight. According the author, both sunlight and darkness are known to trigger hormones in human brain. Exposure to sunlight, for example, increases the release of a hormone that is known as serotonin. In turn, this hormone boosts mood and help people to feel relaxed and calm. Thus, decreased exposure to sunlight leads to a drop in serotonin levels and this can cause major depression. Ideally, this is an observation that justifies the use of light therapy, or phototherapy, for treatment of major depression. Other benefits of sunlight discussed in this article include building of strong bones, prevention of cancer, and curing of skin conditions (Nall, 2018).
On the other hand, the article from Familydoctor.org (2000) discusses various benefits of stable emotional health. According to the article, people who are emotionally healthy have greater control over their thoughts, behaviors, and feelings. Emotional health, in this case, does not merely mean being happy all times. Rather, emotional health involves being aware of one’s emotions. The article views emotional health as a skill that enables people to manage their negative feelings and bounce back from setbacks. People can improve their emotional health by being aware of their emotions, connecting with others, and engaging in regular physical exercises.
- Critical Response
To a great extend, Familydoctor.org’s article (2000) presents a candid argument on what constitutes emotional health. People often find themselves expressing negative emotions because they lack essential skills for maintaining stable emotional health. In times of loses, grief, diseases, and other events that bring major changes in people’s life, emotional health skills become necessary for people to bounce back. It is also true that during difficulties, seeking counseling services, talking to others, and being a member of support group can help distressed people to find meaning and purpose in life.
