Technology Hindering Human Care
Technological inventions are taking over all aspects of human life, and the health care system has not been left behind since it has also adopted some of the inventions. According to BORYCKI et al., nursing abilities are one of the most significant competencies in the modernized health care system (BORYCKI et al., 2017). Due to the new technology inventions such as electronic health records and clinical documentation systems, nurses have had to change how they take care of their patients. This paper aims at showing how the change brought by technology in the hospital has made the patient feel sidelined and how the nurses and doctors can reassure their patients to be on board with the new technology.
Wei stated that the Watson Human Caring Theory is based on promoting patients’ psychological health (Wei & Watson, 2019). According to Angelo, nurses’ primary concern is to care for their patients and improve their health and well-being (Angelo, 2019). however, this is not the case in the modernized hospitals because, according to Angelo, nurses are spending most of their time responding to the equipment they use rather than channeling their concentration to the patient (Angelo, 2019). Electronic health records have replaced what used to be a personal interaction between the patient and the nurses and doctors. This makes the patient feel less needed since the doctors and nurses can access their information using the new technological machines rather than sourcing the information from them. Angelo (2019) notes that Watson came up with concepts that could increase the nurse and the patient’s involvement and create a satisfying experience for them.
The concepts included the ten Caritas, which, according to Angelo (2019), provided guidelines for nurses to improve on their nurse _patient interactions and create a lasting patient care system. The Caritas factors included coming up with a helping _trust relationship, forming humanistic –altruistic values and instillation of faith and hope in the health care system (Angelo, 2019). These guidelines formed the basis for caring and would help the nurses and doctors to involve their patients more in their daily routines.
