Ted Bundy
Ted Bundy, named Theodore Robert Bundy, was an American serial killer born to a single mother around November 24th 1989. Although he was charismatic, smart, and handsome, he managed to kidnap, rape, and murder multiple women. Through all these appealing traits, Bundy was trustworthy to his victims. He employed various measures to get to his victims, including impersonation of authority figure and faking disability. Sometimes, he approached the victims directly, after which, he knocks them unconscious, rape, and murder them. Bundy visited the secondary crime scene where he was believed to assault the decomposing corpse sexually. Some of his victims’ heads were in his apartment as mementos. His evil deeds came to an end around January 24th 1989, with capital punishment. As such, this essay focuses on Ted Bundy’s standard profile, typology, and the nature of the resolution of crimes related to him.
Common Profile.
According to Mullin (2019), Ted Bundy was born in Burlington, Vermont, to Eleanor Louise Cowell and an unknown father. Early in his life, he stayed with his maternal grandparents for around three years. It is worth noting that his grandfather Samuel, was a bully and a psychopath. As a young man, he appeared to be a model. For example, as a law student, he even worked at a suicide prevention line (Lavender, 2020). Lavender (2020) describes Bundy as respectable, charismatic, handsome, and kind, but behind all that, he a serial killer who butchered over thirty young women and girls. Bundy’s entry to the serial killing ranks started when he was a prime suspect of the murder of a student from the University of Washington, Ann Healy, in 1974 (Mullin, 2019). The same year, he attacked seven more women in Washington, raising tension among students. Later in 1974, he moved from Washington to Utah, where he enrolled as a student. Through the 1970s, Bundy focused on young girls and women.
Although he dumped the bodies of the women and young girls he raped and murdered, he went back to the abandoned bodies and assault the corpses sexually till the bodies are too decomposed or eaten by wild animals (Lavender, 2020). Lavender further explains that Bundy would also collect victims’ heads and display them in his house as trophies, and sometimes after applying makeup, perform sexual acts on them. In addition to this, to bond with his victims, he would eat some of their body parts. The only woman who knew him well enough was his girlfriend, Elizabeth Kendall. She played a central role in the conviction of Bundy by giving up his name to the police officers. Through the convictions, Bundy faced arrest, trial, and sentence, thereby executed on an electric chair around 1989.
Typology
Through various scientific assessment of criminal acts in society, there is the identification of variety among criminals. Various scholars argued that a significant proportion of offenders were born criminals, with some being abnormal (Rakestraw & Cameron, 2019). An example of typology identified is a typology of lust offenders. The typology is further into organized and disorganized social and antisocial offenders. Disordered asocial offender combines disorderly habits and general environment (Holmes sample, 2009). Mostly, the disorganized asocial offender is nonathletic, had no father figure, and have experienced emotional abuse as well as physical abuse. As a result, they are always a loner. FBI further clarifies that these offenders always return to the crime scene, attend the victim’s burial, and may turn to religion (Holmes sample, 2009). During interviews, they tend to show sympathy, and they are much corporative when interviewed at night.
Contrary, organized nonsocial offenders exhibit high intelligence, charisma, had a father figure, sexually competent, and are geographically and occupationally mobile. Besides, after committing the crime, they tend anticipating questioning, moving and disposing of the body, volunteering information to the police, and similar to disorganized asocial offenders, they always return to the scene of the crime (Holmes sample, 2009). During interviews, they confirm that they can only admit to what they must, thereby using direct strategies and are confident of the details. As such, Ted Bundy is both the disorganized asocial offender and an organized asocial offender (Holmes typology, n.d). For he was intelligent, charismatic, always returned to the scene of a crime, showed empathy during interviews, and was both geographically and occupationally mobile. For example, he moved from Washington to Utah.
Resolution of the crimes
Throughout the 1970s, Bundy committed multiple crimes from homicide, rape, and kidnap. Although he went through several arrests and convictions, he managed to escape correctional facilities. Also, on trials, he denied the charges against him. However, he later confessed to murders and other crimes he allegedly committed (Lavender, 2020). As a result, he was jailed, raped by four men in jail, and later sentenced to execution on death row.
Conclusion
Generally, Ted Bundy was a terrifying American serial killer. He used his charisma, intelligence, and physical attraction to appeal to his victims. Therefore, his criminal acts are classifiable as both disorganized asocial offender and organized asocial offender. Throughout the 1970s, he had criminal cases pilling up against him in both Washington and Utah. Despite his several escapes on correctional facilities, he was finally arrested and sentenced to execution on death row.
