Template on Reflection of Nurse Practitioner
Nurses often play a vital role in the healthcare industry, such as recording medical history and relative symptoms, collaborating with patients and other healthcare teams to provide patient care, and monitoring patients’ progress. A point to note is that nurses are two given categories: nurse practitioners and advanced nursing practitioners. Advanced nursing practitioners differ from nursing practitioners since they practice nursing at an advanced practice level (Blair and Jansen, 2015). Advanced nursing practitioners have invaluable roles since they autonomously make decision-based assessments, diagnoses, among other aspects, such as the interpretation of test results.
Ultimately, due to the given tone of diverse responsibilities, it is essentially crucial for an advanced nursing practitioner to self-reflect on the various aspect to ascertain the imminent effectiveness of service delivery. Engaging in reflective practices helps an advanced nursing practitioner reflect on previous actions that establish a continuous learning process. As an advanced nursing practitioner, I have to pay critical attention to the practical values in conjunction with theories that form and inform the hospital’s daily activities (Hill, 2017). Ultimately, the reflective process is built upon the four fundamental pillars of advanced practices. These fundamental pillars include clinical practice, facilitation of learning, effective leadership, and evidence research in conjunction with development. a Nurse practitioners’ reflection will consist of what the given course means to them, related course outcomes regarding the practice, related program outcomes, how the practice relates to one’s current practicum, and the impact of advanced practice roles on the future advanced practice using the Gibbs reflective cycle. The Gibbs cycle of reflection involves six steps of reflection: the description, feelings, evaluation, analysis, conclusion, and the action plan.
Description- what happened?
The step involves describing the incident in which an advanced nurse had to put into practice her roles. Therefore, one will have to ask themselves the roles of an advanced nursing practitioner in any given situation. A point to note is that there is no need to draw any form of conclusion at this stage as an advanced nurse practitioner but instead focus on the incident’s relevant information. This will include asking questions such as what essentially happened? Where did it happen? When did it happen, which another particular person was there? Did anyone react? How was their reaction? What did you do as an advanced nursing practitioner? What clinical duty di you deliver. Therefore, this given area focuses on the background of the incident toward providing a better understanding. A point to also note is that this section also focuses on the aspects of clinical practice whereby an advanced nurse practitioner had the opportunity to exercise the different roles such as working in different role territories including nurse practitioners among other significant posts such as clinical nursing specialists, and certified nurse anaesthetists and midwives.
Feelings-what were you thinking and feeling?
Under this given segment, as an advanced nursing practitioner, one should reflect on the given diverse advance practice nursing roles with the course outcomes. Additionally, in this given section, an advanced nursing practitioner must provide an account of the emotions during the incident or situation. For instance, one would ask themselves what the negatives and positives of the given experience were? Additionally, while pondering on the emotions, one needs to consider integrating the available knowledge from previous courses to care for patients involved in the hospital. One also has to think over the ability to apply critical thinking skills regarding differential diagnoses needed to select health challenges encountered by different patients as an essential aspect of management in facilitating change. In this given section, an advanced nursing practitioner must also reflect on the roles of developing clinical skills in terms of what they thought and felt during the experience.
Evaluation-what was good and bad about the incident and experience?
Evaluation allows an advanced nursing practitioner to think about how the situation or incident went in terms of both positives and negatives of the given situation or situations. A point to note is that all the available program outcomes for an advanced nurse practitioner in any advanced practising program significantly impact the nurse’s different roles as an advanced practitioner. For instance, some of the questions that one can ask themselves whether their experiences facilitated learning as one of the four pillars of advanced nursing practice and whether their leadership skills negatively impacted the given situation.
Analysis-what sense can you make of the situation?
One’s current practicum often allows them to apply for all the available advanced nursing practitioner roles. A point to note is that it is not always that easy to complete or meet all advanced nursing practitioners’ roles at once. Even though many of the given functions seem more comfortable to achieve, some always require cultivation (King, Todd, and Sanders, 2017). Therefore, these processes do not often happen all at once but rather need time to perfect. Thus, one always has to think about the aspects that might have hindered or helped the situation. Additionally, this given section can also be improved through literature and research linked to previous experiences making good use of evidence research.
Conclusion-what else would you have done?
This section gives an advanced nurse practitioner to consider what they might have learned from the situation. Additionally, this section also allows one to think about what they might have done in the given case but failed. None the less, some of the questions that can be asked in this given section include the type of skills needed to handle the situation next time and how one would react if they found themselves in a similar case in the future. For instance, what would they have done to ensure that all the four pillars of advanced nursing practice have been implemented, such as improving clinical practice, effectively facilitating learning, demonstrating effective leadership skills, and researching relevant literature before the experience?
Action plan-if it arose again, what would you do?
As an advanced nursing practitioner, one has to work on the future of advanced nursing practices toward upholding patients’ welfare. Ultimately, through evidence research and development, an advanced nursing practitioner is expected to find a new way to deal with similar situations in the future and the kind of changes that might be made towards solving a similar situation in the future. For instance, some of the common questions that one may ask themselves include; what will you do in the future to improve advanced nursing practices, and what will you do to ensure that the future of advanced nursing practices is maintained?
